Education and Work Experience - Professional Requirements:

Must be skilled in pastoral leadership and developmental activities with the ability to facilitate both adult and youth group discussions and Bible studies. The Salvation Army is a part of the Wesleyan Holiness tradition. Appropriate candidates must agree to the Doctrinal and Positional Statements.

Scope of Position:

The Pastoral Care Chaplain is an integral part of the Senior Management Team for The Salvation Army's Portland Metro Social Services. The Chaplain provides support to the various Program Directors and staff in the area of spiritual assessment, counseling and development. The Pastoral Care Chaplain will be expected to participate within the framework of the program in a manner which will both facilitate the needs of participants and staff while at the same time promoting The Salvation Army's purposes as defined by its Mission Statement.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: A working knowledge of addiction recovery, along with skills and knowledge in residential treatment and related areas is desired in this position. It would be anticipated that through attendance at staff trainings, workshops, or conferences, as well as through self-study, such skills will be further addressed to enhance competency and performance in the fulfillment of those duties associated with this position. It should be noted that this position requires the Pastoral Care Chaplain to work with clients who may demonstrate unpredictable, impulsive, and sometimes aggressive behaviors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  1. Establish and maintain regular office hours which will allow time for clients to seek spiritual support or guidance.
  2. Provide spiritual counsel, guidance and inspiration as may be needed to encourage the spiritual development of those participating in the programs.
  3. Develop a working relationship with staff and be available to provide spiritual leadership to staff and programs.
  4. Participate in case management, clinical or other staff meetings and as part of the Senior Management Team assist in making program decisions.
  5. Develop and maintain life skills classes in conjunction with program team.
  6. Interview participants for spiritual assessment.
  7. Provide spiritual encouragement to all participants, residents and staff.
  8. Facilitate weekly chapel and additional classes on spirituality.
  9. Establish and maintain an ongoing Bible Study at each program that will meet the needs of the participants.
  10. Provide for regular fellowship activities which will promote community and mutual encouragement amongst the participants through special events or other activities. These will include programs with special emphasis: i.e. Holidays, Seasons, Events including music and creative
  11. Attend and participate in monthly House Meetings and weekly Orientations for potential client/residents.
  12. Promote a Christian atmosphere through Bible study, devotions, and prayer.
  13. Encourage client attendance at corps Sunday services, programs, and functions and participate with them whenever possible.
  14. Arrange for transportation to special events/program as requested.
  15. Maintain "Protecting the Mission" standards.
  16. Other duties as may be assigned.


Working Conditions

Possible exposure to communicable diseases. Requires daily involvement in personal and professionally sensitive matters which require maintaining confidentiality.

May require long periods of sitting at a desk using a personal computer and telephone. Able to walk, sit, stand, bend on an intermittent basis. Must occasionally lift and move up to 25 pounds, usually file boxes.

Works in an office setting. Work may include multiple, simultaneous projects. Work activities will be characterized by interruptions and noise from ringing telephones, printers, copiers, and walk-in traffic, multiple deadlines, and competing priorities.

Frequent phone and in-person contact with people from diverse backgrounds. May encounter situations with clients involving frustration, anger, antagonism, and anxiety. Must be able to deal tactfully and diplomatically in all situations.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, hand, or feel objects, tools, or controls; to talk and hear; reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.

Organizes projects, sets priorities, calculates, catalogues, inspects, analyzes plans, comprehends, and cooperates with others.

Works with minimal supervision and a high degree of independence. May be required to make independent decisions that may involve unique or unusual situations and/or complex issues and dealing with demanding requests and/or timelines.

Occasional travel overnight. May require driving long distances in all levels of light or darkness and in all weather conditions. May require travel by air.

Must have a valid Driver's License and acceptable driving record.
