The Student Success Coordinator offers academic coaching and comprehensive support to UIC Nursing students across all programs. This role plays a critical part in early intervention and ongoing mentorship to promote student success, accountability, and professionalism. The Coordinator works closely with faculty, program directors, academic advisors, and student support services to identify and proactively support at-risk students, implement and track individualized success strategies, connect students to additional campus resources and support services, and create/implement innovative student success support strategies across all academic programs. The SSC also trains and supervises student peer tutors.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Academic Coaching and Student Support
  • Provides individualized and group coaching for nursing students to promote academic success, time management, study strategies, test-taking skills, and clinical judgment.
  • Identifies at-risk students based on UIC retention priority guidelines, exam performance, ATI indicators, missed assignments, behavioral concerns, and absenteeism.
  • Collaborates with course faculty to identify students in need of early support and creates success plans. Works with academic advisors and program directors to track and report early indicators using university-supported systems (i.e., iAdvise, Banner).
  • Establishes regular meetings with faculty and department heads - especially those teaching introductory and high-challenge courses - to receive real-time reports starting in Week 1 on students needing additional support. Follows up regularly with students to monitor progress and adjust support strategies.
  • Facilitates weekly availability for office hours and student appointments; supports self-referrals and faculty referrals.
  • Collaborates with tutoring services, UIC's Disability Resource Center, and other relevant campus resources to support student needs. Tracks and documents student progress, trends, and intervention outcomes. Supports preparation for NCLEX readiness, in collaboration with course instructors.
  • Works with the Associate Dean, Department Heads, Program Directors, and faculty to schedule regular class visits to remind students of available success services and encourage early engagement.
  • Trains and supervises student peer tutors.

Program Collaboration and Development
  • Partners with faculty, Student Success Coordinators across campuses, and other stakeholders to enhance student support programs.
  • Collaborates with Program Directors and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs to align efforts with college-wide academic initiatives.
  • Supports Student Success Program efforts, including developing tools, workshops, and group discussions (e.g., small focus groups) as appropriate.
  • Partners with the Urban Health Program (UHP) to establish and maintain tutoring and subject review initiatives.
  • Serves as the College's designated ATI expert by maintaining required ATI Champion training and certification, disseminating ATI updates and webinars, and providing ATI support and guidance to students and faculty.

Freshman and Sophomore Student Engagement
  • Provides academic advising for freshmen and sophomore nursing students and participates in activities that promote early connection and involvement within the College of Nursing.
  • Attends orientation sessions, welcome events, and other student engagement activities to support a smooth transition into the program.
  • Collaborates with faculty and staff to provide information about academic resources, student organizations, and opportunities for involvement, fostering a sense of belonging and commitment to the nursing profession.
  • Maintains confidentiality and adheres to FERPA and institutional policies.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications Required:
  1. Bachelor's Degree*
  2. Demonstrated experience working in student support services or related higher education roles, including academic success coaching, student goal setting, and creating individualized action plans.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with nursing programs or nursing students.
  • Strong understanding of student learning strategies, developmental education, and student success frameworks.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations and promoting inclusive learning environments.
  • Ability to analyze student performance data and identify patterns to inform support strategies.
  • Experience with learning management systems (i.e., Blackboard) and educational tools.
  • Proficient in using online scheduling, educational software, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
