Torch is seeking multiple Software Safety Engineer to support the identification, analysis, mitigation, and verification of software and firmware safety risks for DoD missile systems, command and control (C2BMC) systems, radar platforms, UAVs, THAAD, and other mission- and safety-critical defense systems. This role focuses on ensuring software safety, integrity, and compliance throughout the system lifecycle, including requirements development, design, implementation, integration, and sustainment.

Positions are available across multiple levels, with scope, technical depth, and leadership responsibilities aligned to experience and grade.

Key Responsibilities (All Levels):

  • Perform software and firmware safety analysis across the system lifecycle.
  • Identify, assess, and document software safety hazards, risks, and mitigations.
  • Support system safety activities for missile systems, radars, UAVs, C2BMC, and embedded platforms.
  • Evaluate software compliance with safety, airworthiness, and program requirements.
  • Analyze requirements, design, code, test, and operational data for safety impacts.
  • Support development and maintenance of safety artifacts (hazard analyses, safety assessments, risk matrices).
  • Support verification and validation of software safety requirements and controls.
  • Participate in safety reviews, audits, and program technical reviews.
  • Collaborate with systems, software, firmware, test, IV&V, and quality teams.
  • Document findings, recommendations, and risk assessments clearly and accurately.

Level-Based Expectations:

Software Safety Engineer - Entry / Associate Level

  • Supports safety analyses under supervision.
  • Assists with hazard identification, documentation, and tracking.
  • Learns DoD safety processes, missile defense concepts, and embedded software environments.

Software Safety Engineer - Mid Level

  • Performs software safety analyses with limited supervision.
  • Independently evaluates software artifacts for safety impacts.
  • Contributes to hazard mitigation strategies and verification activities.

Software Safety Engineer - Senior Level

  • Leads software safety analysis efforts for subsystems or functions.
  • Interfaces directly with program teams and customers.
  • Mentors junior engineers and supports cross-program safety activities.

Software Safety Engineer - Principal / Lead Level

  • Provides technical leadership in software safety and risk management.
  • Defines safety strategies, processes, and best practices across programs.
  • Supports major system reviews, certification efforts, and customer engagements.
  • Advises program leadership on software safety and mission risk.

Required Qualifications (All Levels)

  • US Citizenship.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 0-12 years applicable software design engineering experience.
  • Experience or academic background in software safety, system safety, software engineering, firmware, or embedded systems.
  • Understanding of software development lifecycles and system safety principles.
  • Ability to analyze complex technical systems and document safety findings.
  • Active DoD security clearance or ability to obtain one.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting DoD missile systems, THAAD, C2BMC, radar systems, UAVs, or similar platforms.
  • Familiarity with safety and airworthiness standards such as MIL-STD-882, DO-178, ARP4754, or equivalent.
  • Experience with software IV&V, software assurance, or mission assurance.
  • Experience with embedded software and firmware safety.

  • Clear technical writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Sound judgment and commitment to mission and personnel safety.

Work Environment:

  • Customer site.
  • Collaboration with cross-functional engineering and program teams.
  • Occasional travel may be required to support program needs.
