Ariadne Labs is a joint center for health systems innovation at Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Our goal is to drive scalable solutions for better care at critical moments in people's lives everywhere. Better care means better health outcomes, lower costs, and more actual caring. Critical means solving health systems failures that have major impact, typically touching people by the millions. Ariadne Labs currently has research programs in the areas of childbirth, surgery, palliative care, and primary health care.
We are seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist to lead and contribute to innovative, multidisciplinary research focused on improving health systems at scale. The Research Scientist will play a key role in designing, executing, and translating research into practical tools, and frameworks that improve care delivery locally and globally.
This role is ideal for a scientist who thrives at the intersection of research, implementation, and impact, and who is motivated by producing work that meaningfully improves health outcomes.
In consultation with their Principal Investigator (PI), undertake and execute a program of scientific study culminating in publication. Drives research projects scientifically and determines the course of research as evidenced by leadership, obtaining funding, writing, or other recognition. May not necessarily receive independent resources; however, their contribution is essential to the conceptual/scientific success of the project. They assist their PI in the training and supervision of other laboratory personnel and in a wide variety of administrative tasks, as necessary.

Essential Functions
Makes proficient intellectual contributions to scientific strategies of the group/lab and plays a leadership role by acting as subject matter authority in the field.
Contributes to the design and execution of experiments and/or research projects.
Exercises judgment in selecting methods and technologies to obtain results.
May collaborate with external researchers and/or receive external project funding support.
Presents results and prepares publications.
May assist PI in the training and supervision of other staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and lead health systems research projects, including mixed-methods, qualitative, and quantitative studies

  • Develop and test scalable interventions such as clinical checklists, decision-support tools, conversation guides, and measurement frameworks

  • Analyze complex health system data and synthesize findings into actionable insights

  • Lead manuscript preparation for peer-reviewed journals and contribute to reports, policy briefs, and implementation guides

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including clinicians, implementation scientists, policymakers, and international partners

  • Support the development and evaluation of global standards and measurement systems

  • Contribute to grant writing, funding proposals, and progress reports

  • Mentor trainees, research staff, or junior investigators as appropriate

  • Present findings to diverse audiences, including academic, clinical, policy, and global stakeholders

Qualifications

Required:

  • PhD, DrPH, ScD, MD, or equivalent doctoral degree in health services research, public health, implementation science, systems engineering, social science, or a related field

  • Previous Research experience (inclusive of graduate and postdoctoral experience) 5-7 years required

  • Demonstrated experience conducting rigorous health systems or health services research

  • Strong publication record or clear trajectory toward independent scholarship

  • Experience working in interdisciplinary and collaborative research environments

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred:

  • Experience with implementation science, quality improvement, or systems-level interventions

  • Familiarity with global health, health equity, or cross-cultural research collaborations

  • Experience translating research into practical tools, policies, or large-scale programs

  • Prior success in securing or contributing to funded research
