Job Summary The Traveling Data Center Technician II is responsible for supporting the installation, configuration, and maintenance of fiber optic and copper cabling infrastructure within large-scale, new construction and colocation data center environments. This role includes pulling, dressing, terminating, testing, and patching cable; building out server racks and network closets; and performing fiber and copper testing using industry-standard tools. The technician works in dynamic, fast-paced environments and must adhere to strict safety protocols while maintaining professional communication and teamwork. This position requires travel, the ability to work extended hours, and hands-on technical expertise in fiber and copper infrastructure installation. Job Responsibilities
- Perform cable infrastructure installation, including fiber and copper rough-in.
- Pull, dress, label, terminate, test, and patch fiber and copper cabling.
- Install and configure single-mode and multi-mode fiber, including ST, LC, SC, and SC-APC connectors.
- Conduct OTDR testing (including 144-strand fiber) and Fluke testing for small strand fiber and copper cabling.
- Troubleshoot fiber and copper connectivity issues.
- Rack and stack equipment and build out server racks and rack elevations.
- Install fiber trays, ladder racks, power trays, cabinets, and cable management systems.
- Build telecommunications closets, including mounting backboards, cross-connects, racks, and patch panels.
- Perform Outside Plant (OSP) fiber installations into data center facilities.
- Receive materials and assemble hardware components as required.
- Read and interpret blueprints and installation drawings.
- Maintain understanding of cable color codes and industry standards.
- Follow all safety guidelines, including proper PPE usage, OSHA compliance, and jobsite cleanliness.
- Communicate professionally with team members and leadership.
- Remain adaptable and flexible to support evolving project needs and extended work schedules.
Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum two years of experience as a Data Center Technician.
- Minimum two years of fiber installation and maintenance experience.
- Demonstrated experience with copper and Cat6 termination.
- Experience building telecommunications closets, including installation of racks, patch panels, cross-connects, and fiber hardware.
- Experience performing OTDR and Fluke testing.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints preferred.
- OSP installation experience highly preferred.
- Fiber splicing experience preferred.
- OSHA 10 certification preferred.
- BICSI Installer 1 or 2 certification preferred.
- CFOT certification preferred.
- Experience working in colocation or new construction data center environments preferred.
- Physical ability to work at heights, on ladders and lifts, in confined spaces, and in active construction environments.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds as needed.
- Ability to stand for extended shifts, including evenings and weekends.
- Must provide snips and composite-toe work boots; additional PPE will be provided.
Work Experience
- Experience working in large-scale, new construction or colocation data center environments.
- Experience working extended schedules, typically starting at 7:00 a.m., averaging approximately 50 hours per week.
