About the College

Founded in 1925 as one of the university's four original colleges, the College of Arts and Sciences is comprised of 15 departments offering a wide variety of courses and programs in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, mathematics, physical sciences, and natural sciences. The college enrolls over 10,000 students representing over a quarter of the Texas Tech University student population. In addition to its growth, the college maintains a 22:1 student to faculty ratio.

About the Department/School/Area

About the Social Work Program

The Social Work Program is housed in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work. Accreditation with CSWE was initially granted in 1979 for the BA in social work degree. The Master of Social Work (MSW) program, offering an advanced generalist approach with a focus on health and well-being, was established in 2015 and is fully accredited through 2031. Today, twelve full-time faculty lines and two full-time staff positions are dedicated to the preparation of BASW and MSW level students.

Major/Essential Functions

At Texas Tech University, the Professor of Practice title is used to recruit individuals with exceptional backgrounds and achievements in academic, business, government, or other professional practice. Primary responsibilities normally will be to teach in an area of expertise, mentor students in professional and career preparation, and liaise with professional contacts and entities on behalf of the department or program.

Faculty Qualifications


  1. Master's in Social Work (MSW) or equivalent degree in social work from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited institution.
  2. 2+ years of post-MSW social work practice experience.
  3. Active license to practice social work in any U.S. state.
  4. 2+ years' experience teaching and developing social work curriculum with web-based modalities for asynchronous learning. It is expected that faculty will be able to build their own courses and modify existing courses as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the required qualifications, individuals with the following preferred qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

  1. Credentials and training to provide specific types of social work interventions.
  2. 3+ years' experience teaching social work as an instructor of record for college or university level coursework.
  3. 7+ years of combined social work practice experience at any level or a Doctorate in Social Work or a related discipline.
  4. An ability to teach across the social work curriculum in an advanced generalist program.
  5. Demonstrated record of contributions to the profession's knowledge base, through peer-reviewed publications, presentations, or significant community service at the local, state, regional, or national level.
