About the Team/Role

The Database Administrator 4 is responsible for designing, building, implementing, supporting, and operationalizing WEX global business-critical database systems. You will plan computerized databases, including definition, structure, documentation, long-range requirements, operational guidelines, and protection. This role ensures the accuracy and completeness of data in master files and various support tools, establishes security and integrity controls, and formulates policies and standards for database management. You will propose and implement enhancements that improve system performance and reliability, working across internal, external, and client-focused solutions.

How you'll make an impact

  • Provisioning & Administration: Install, configure, administer, and patch on-premises and Amazon RDS PostgreSQL and MySQL.

  • System Design: Collaborate with various teams in developing system hardware layouts, configuring firewall rules, tuning, and load testing mission-critical database systems.

  • Performance Engineering: Monitor database performance proactively; recommend and implement optimization strategies to ensure efficiency, stability, and scalability.

  • AWS Cloud proficiency: Proven experience provisioning and managing AWS RDS and Aurora (PostgreSQL/MySQL) at scale. Proficiency with related AWS services (IAM, KMS, CloudWatch, S3) is essential.

  • Automation focus : Proficient with Python, Go, or relevant scripting languages (Bourne/Bash, C shell, Perl), and experienced in automating deployments, patching, and scaling activities.

  • Developer Collaboration: Conduct code reviews and provide support to application developers, including data refreshes, SQL and PL/pgSQL performance tuning, and best practice recommendations.

  • Strategy & Protection: Implement database backup and recovery strategies while maintaining strict compliance with database security standards.

  • Documentation: Build and maintain documentation for database administration, management processes, and procedures.

  • Legacy Support: Assist with routine Oracle database administration tasks as needed.

Experience you'll bring

  • Experience: 8+ years of total DBA experience, including at least 4+ years specifically with PostgreSQL. (Experience with Oracle or other RDBMSs prior to PostgreSQL is also considered).

  • AWS Proficiency: Hands-on experience provisioning and managing AWS RDS and Aurora (PostgreSQL/MySQL) at scale. Proficiency with related AWS services (IAM, KMS, CloudWatch, S3) is essential.

  • Technical Tuning: Strong SQL performance troubleshooting and tuning skills with proficiency in PSQL/PLSQL scripting.

  • Systems & Scripting: Comfortable working with Linux internals; experience scripting in Bash, Python, or other languages.

  • DevOps experience : experience operating within and influencing agile, Scrum-based software development environments would be favorably considered.

  • infrastructure as code skills : experience with Terraform, YAML, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD is preferred.

  • Monitoring and Observability: experience working with monitoring and observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, and Amazon CloudWatch. Experience with other enterprise-level monitoring tools will also be considered.

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Technical Readiness & Flexibility: Comfortable with flexible hours and after-hours support as needed for on-call rotations, production work, or high-impact tasks.

  • Database & Automation Competence: Experience with database operations, performance tuning, and automation; able to implement solutions under guidance or standard practices.

The base pay range represents the anticipated low and high end of the pay range for this position. Actual pay rates will vary and will be based on various factors, such as your qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role. Base pay is one component of WEX's total compensation package. Most sales positions are eligible for commission under the terms of an applicable plan. Non-sales roles are typically eligible for a quarterly or annual bonus based on their role and applicable plan.
