Job Summary

The Traveling Lead Data Center Technician serves as the onsite lead for assigned installation crews while actively participating in structured cabling and fiber infrastructure projects. This role combines advanced technical expertise in fiber installation, splicing, testing, and data center buildouts with team supervision and project coordination. The Lead Technician ensures all installations are completed in accordance with quality, safety, and project requirements while maintaining productivity and professionalism across large-scale commercial and colocation data center environments. This position requires travel and flexibility to support various project schedules.

Job Responsibilities




  • Lead and supervise installation crews of 5-15 technicians on structured cabling and fiber projects.



  • Install cable infrastructure and perform fiber rough-in for commercial and data center environments.



  • Terminate copper and fiber cabling, including single-mode and multi-mode fiber.



  • Perform ribbon and fusion splicing using appropriate equipment.



  • Install and configure connectors including ST, LC, SC, and SC-APC.



  • Conduct Fluke testing, OTDR testing, and fiber troubleshooting.



  • Rack and stack equipment; build out server racks and complete rack elevations.



  • Install fiber trays, ladder racks, cabinets, power trays, and cable management systems.



  • Execute Outside Plant (OSP) fiber installations into data centers.



  • Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and project documentation.



  • Monitor material usage and confirm required materials are onsite.



  • Receive materials and assemble hardware as required.



  • Perform quality control inspections and correct installation deficiencies.



  • Conduct daily jobsite walks to ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.



  • Lead daily stretch and flex meetings and reinforce safe work practices.



  • Communicate daily labor goals and verify accurate time reporting.



  • Facilitate end-of-day huddles to review production, constraints, and next-day planning.



  • Coordinate with project leadership regarding change orders and scope adjustments.



  • Maintain professional communication with team members and project stakeholders.



  • Enforce OSHA standards, proper PPE usage, and safety policies.




Job Requirements




  • High school diploma or GED.



  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in telecommunications, data center, or related technical field.



  • Minimum five (5) years of fiber installation experience, including splicing and termination.



  • Minimum six (6) months of supervisory or managerial experience.



  • Proven ability to manage crews of 5-15 personnel.



  • Demonstrated proficiency in fiber termination, splicing, and troubleshooting.



  • Ability to interpret blueprints, specifications, and quality documentation.



  • Knowledge of universal communications color codes.



  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and MS Project.



  • Experience using collaboration and document management tools such as MS Teams, Adobe, and Bluebeam preferred.



  • Active OSHA 10 certification preferred.



  • Ability to meet minimum driving standards.



  • Ability to work at heights, on ladders and scissor lifts, and in confined spaces.



  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds.



  • Ability to stand for extended periods during shifts.



  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including extended hours and six-day workweeks as required.



  • Willingness and ability to travel for project assignments.



  • Daily per diem of $50 provided for travel assignments.



  • Must possess and be proficient with required hand tools and PPE, including screwdrivers, pliers, punch-down tools, crimp tools, cable strippers, volt-ohmmeter, continuity tester, flashlight, gloves, and safety footwear.




Work Experience




  • Experience supporting colocation and hyperscale data center environments.



  • Experience with new construction data center projects and jobsite trailer operations.



  • Experience performing large-scale rack deployments and fiber infrastructure buildouts.

Additional Job Details (Commute, Attendance, etc.)




  • Project schedules may include standard 40-hour workweeks (Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM-3:30 PM) or extended schedules (Monday-Saturday, 7:00 AM-5:30 PM) depending on project needs.



  • Travel is required based on project assignments.



  • Daily per diem of $50 provided during travel assignments.
