Job Summary

The Traveling Lead Data Center Technician serves as the onsite lead for assigned installation crews while actively participating in structured cabling and fiber infrastructure projects. This role combines advanced technical expertise in fiber installation, splicing, testing, and data center buildouts with team supervision and project coordination. The Crew Lead ensures all installations are completed according to quality and safety standards while supervising crew productivity and efficiency. This position requires extended travel to project sites and the ability to support both short- and long-term data center construction assignments.

Job Responsibilities




  • Lead and supervise installation crews of 5-15 technicians on structured cabling and fiber projects



  • Take direction from superintendents and translate scope requirements into daily work assignments



  • Act as a hands-on working lead while overseeing assigned portions of the project scope



  • Install cable infrastructure and perform fiber rough-in in data center environments



  • Terminate copper and fiber cabling, including single-mode and multi-mode fiber



  • Perform ribbon and fusion splicing using appropriate equipment



  • Conduct Fluke testing, OTDR testing, and fiber troubleshooting



  • Rack and stack equipment and build out server racks and rack elevations



  • Install fiber trays, ladder racks, cabinets, power trays, and cable management systems



  • Execute Outside Plant (OSP) fiber installations into data centers



  • Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and project documentation



  • Monitor onsite materials and confirm daily material usage



  • Conduct daily stretch and flex meetings and reinforce safe work practices



  • Ensure accurate daily time reporting and completion of required documentation



  • Conduct daily jobsite walks to monitor safety, quality, and production



  • Stop unsafe work practices and correct improper installations immediately



  • Lead end-of-day huddles to review production, issues, and next-day planning



  • Report project updates, constraints, and change needs to project leadership



  • Enforce OSHA standards, proper PPE usage, and all safety policies




Job Requirements




  • High school diploma or GED



  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in telecommunications or related technical field



  • Minimum five (5) years of fiber installation experience, including splicing and termination



  • Minimum six (6) months of supervisory or managerial experience



  • Proven ability to manage crews of 5-15 team members



  • Demonstrated ability to terminate fiber and troubleshoot infrastructure



  • Ability to interpret blueprints, specifications, and quality documentation



  • Knowledge of universal communications color codes



  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and MS Project



  • Experience with MS Teams, Adobe, and Bluebeam preferred



  • Ability to meet minimum driving standards



  • Ability to work at heights, on ladders and lifts, and in confined spaces



  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds



  • Ability to stand for extended periods during shifts



  • Willingness to travel for extended project assignments and work flexible schedules



  • Must possess and effectively use required hand tools and PPE




Work Experience




  • Experience in colocation and new construction data center environments



  • Experience working in active job site trailer settings



  • Experience supporting large-scale rack deployments and fiber infrastructure buildouts



  • Experience supporting project durations ranging from 2-4 months, with some assignments extending to 6-12 months

Additional Job Details (Commute, Attendance, etc.)




  • Project assignments may last 2-4 months, with some extending to 6-12 months



  • Home rotation approximately once per month during travel assignments



  • Primary project locations in Texas, including Abilene, San Antonio, Houston, Childress, and Afton, with additional opportunities in New Mexico and Indiana



  • Potential relocation opportunities in select markets based on project needs



  • Daily per diem of $50 provided during travel assignments
