As a Risk Management & Insurance Intern, you will gain hands-on exposure to how a leading general contractor identifies, evaluates, and mitigates risk across complex construction projects. This internship provides a unique opportunity to learn how insurance programs, contract requirements, safety practices, and claims management work together to protect people, projects, and the business.

Our Summer Internship Program runs for 9 weeks and is designed to immerse you in real-world business challenges while providing mentorship, learning opportunities, and exposure to Suffolk's operations, project teams, and corporate functions. The summer will conclude with a Capstone project competed in teams formed within the national cohort.



Responsibilities

What You'll Learn & Support

    Support the Risk Management team in evaluating and managing project-related risks across active construction projects
  • Assist with insurance compliance, including review and tracking of Certificates of Insurance (COIs) for subcontractors and vendors
  • Learn how builder's risk, general liability, workers' compensation, professional liability, and other insurance programs support construction operations
  • Help maintain risk and insurance documentation, logs, and internal tracking tools
  • Gain exposure to claims management processes, including incident reporting, documentation, and coordination with internal teams and external partners

Contract & Project Risk Support

  • Assist in reviewing contracts and subcontracts for insurance and risk-related requirements
  • Partner with project teams to ensure insurance and risk management requirements are met prior to work commencing
  • Support coordination between Risk Management, Legal, Safety, Project Management, and Field Operations teams

Field & Operational Exposure

  • Gain exposure to jobsite operations to better understand how risk, safety, and insurance considerations impact day-to-day construction activities
  • Learn how risk management strategies support safety, quality, and successful project execution

Program Experience

  • Participate in Suffolk's Summer Speaker Series, intern events, jobsite tours, and networking opportunities
  • Work alongside experienced professionals who will provide mentorship and real-time feedback
  • Build a foundational understanding of risk management within the construction industry and explore long-term career paths


Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program
  • Majors in Risk Management, Insurance, Business, Finance, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related fields will be considered
  • Strong interest in risk management, insurance, construction, or corporate operations
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and proactive
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team
  • Demonstrated professionalism when working with internal teams and external partners


Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods of time; talk or hear; perform fine motor, hand, and finger skills in the use of a keyboard, telephone, or writing. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; and reach with arms and/or hands. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The employee will spend their time in an office environment with a quiet to moderate noise level.
