About the Job

The Schroeder Lab requires assistance on a recently funded NSF-USDA funded project looking at Fitness-virulence tradeoffs across the pathogen, pig, and population scales for genetic variants of PRRSV-2.

Responsibilities:
70% - Conduct research and provide technical assistance to the PI, postdocs, students, and trainees in the lab on areas of virus isolation, next generation sequencing, PCR and bioinformatics

15% - Collaborate with PI in the consortium (NSF-USDA: Fitness-virulence tradeoffs across the pathogen, pig, and population scales for genetic variants of PRRSV-2 project) in the generation and testing of research hypotheses and data analysis, writing of papers, grants, and reports, and preparation of presentations and lectures

5% - Attend, participate, or present at laboratory meetings, seminars, graduate and undergraduate lectures, and conferences as needed

5% - Perform miscellaneous laboratory and office duties as assigned by Dr Schroeder including, but not limited to, ordering supplies and reagents and help the PIs in the organization and coordination of meetings and projects

5% - Maintain frequent communication with other faculty and collaborators, including, if required traveling to destinations to meet with collaborators and collect data

Work Location:

Veterinary Medical Center, Mainly in-person

Work Schedule:

8am - 4:30pm, to start July 2026

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree with one or more years of research training
  • Experience working in a microbiology/ molecular biology research lab
  • Experience in microbiology, sterile lab techniques
  • Experience maintaining documentation of procedures and experimental data in a logical and organized manner
  • Ability to collaborate respectfully with other members of the laboratory, learn, and to take direction from personnel at all

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine or related field
About the Department

The Veterinary Population Medicine department (VPM) specializes in population and individual animal medicine focusing on large animals' health and production, biomedical science, and ecosystem and public health. Our faculty members conduct animal and public-health-focused research to better diagnose, treat, and prevent animal disease, as well as diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans. Faculty provide clinical instruction in medicine, diseases, surgery, production medicine, public health and reproduction of domestic large-animal species and are home to faculty in clinics, epidemiology, veterinary public health, and pathology. Faculty members provide clinical services for animals, diagnostic services to animal owners, and continuing education and extension programs for veterinarians and animal owners

Teaching

The Veterinary Population Medicine Department provides clinical instruction in medicine, surgery, production medicine, diagnostics and reproduction of domestic large-animal species and is home to faculty in epidemiology, veterinary public health, and pathology. The department provides residency training in large animal medicine, surgery, pathology, and veterinary public health and preventive veterinary medicine and works with students in the Veterinary Sciences, and Comparative and Molecular Biosciences graduate programs.

Research

Faculty members conduct animal and public-health-focused research to better diagnose, treat, eliminate and prevent animal disease, as well as diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans.

Service

Faculty members provide clinical services for animals in the Leatherdale Equine Center and Large Animal Hospital, as well as diagnostic services to animal owners through the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. They consult with producers and veterinarians in the community, provide continuing education and extension programs for veterinarians and animals owners, and play and active role in the Center for Animal Health and Food Safety, John Fetrow Dairy Education Center, Equine Center, and the Swine Disease Eradication Center.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $68,800 - $70,000; depending on education/qualifications/experience
