Qualifications

Education equivalent to graduation from a standard high school.

Substitution of Experience for Education: Experience performing landscaping, irrigation, chemical fertilizer application, or golf course maintenance can be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

NSQs: Must become a state licensed or certified Pesticide Applicator within 6 months of their hire date. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required for employment.

Overview

The TSP Irrigation/Spray Technician's primary duties are the operation and maintenance of all irrigation and drainage systems on the golf course and grounds. This classification assists in the selection and application of all pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers associated with grounds and golf course maintenance. This class differs from that of TSP Course Groundskeeper in that the latter performs less complex functions.

Responsibilities

1. Inspects turf, shrubs, lakes, and other outdoor areas to assist in the identification of pesticide, herbicide and fertilizer needs. Under direction, apply pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers at appropriate times to maintain excellent condition of grounds and golf course; documents all applications.
2. Participates in all aspects of golf course maintenance and may occasionally supervise crews for special projects. Responsible for the safety and direction of chemical handlers and/or helpers.
3. Waters greens, tees, fairways, rough, lawns and other areas as needed or scheduled. Monitors daily water usage and informs TSP Golf Course Superintendent of any needed adjustments to the irrigation computer settings.
4. Performs preventive maintenance, repairs, and keeps accurate records on all equipment associated with irrigation and applying pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers.
5. Responsible for reading, understanding, and keeping current with the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) and maintaining them in a convenient location. Maintains chemical storage and mixing areas in compliance with county, state, and federal regulations. Keeps chemical room clean and orderly; secures under lock when not present.
6. Assists in record-keeping relative to irrigation systems including weather and rainfall data; and fertilizer and pesticide applications. Compiles reports of pesticide, herbicide and fertilizer use on the golf course.
7. Maintains proper inventory of parts and products and recommends purchases of products and equipment to management.

TN Driver Standards

State of Tennessee positions that may involve driving responsibilities require candidates to meet the following minimum driver qualifications:

  • A valid driver's license
  • For the past five years, the candidate's driver record must not have record of the following violations: driving under the influence (DUI), reckless driving, license suspension for moving violations, more than 4 moving violations.
