About the Position

The accountant's role within the Maricopa County Attorney's Office is critical in ensuring financial integrity and accurate reporting within the organization. Our department Accountants support four primary areas-Fleet, Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), Asset, and Grants-and the responsibilities outlined below reflect duties performed across all areas.

About the Department

The Maricopa County Attorney's Office is one of the largest public prosecutorial agencies in the nation, serving nearly four million residents in the fourth-largest county in the U.S. In addition to handling all felony prosecutions in Maricopa County and misdemeanor filings in the county's justice court system, the office also provides civil legal services to all county agencies. The department comprises more than 1,100 full-time positions, including attorneys, investigators, paralegals, victim advocates, support staff, and has an annual operating budget of more than $150 million.

We Require

  • One year of experience in auditing, government finance/accounting, grant accounting, or budgeting
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, mathematics, or a closely related field
  • A combination of post-secondary education in accounting, finance, business administration, mathematics, or a closely related field and/or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis

Other Requirements

  • The Maricopa County Attorney's Office requires a thorough background check of all successful candidates and is authorized to test prospective employees for the presence of illegally accessed drugs
  • Drug testing is conducted once an offer has been extended and prior to placement
  • MCAO Accountant assignments can include Fleet, RICO, Asset and Grants
    • To be eligible for the fleet role, the candidate must currently possess or can obtain a valid Arizona Driver's License at the time of hire
    • To be eligible to assist with grants, the candidate must successfully complete the grantor's required training within three months of hire

Experience in the public sector or non-profit accounting with specific experience in auditing, grants accounting, or budgeting.

Job Contributions

  • Work with large and complex datasets using Microsoft Excel and Access to support data analysis and reporting, including applying advanced data transformation techniques, maintaining structured data environments, and building or modifying queries or formulas to ensure accurate and efficient data retrieval
  • Process, analyze, review, reconcile, and monitor financial activities and initiate journal entries to ensure the financial integrity of assigned accounts
  • Perform required financial close activities to include reconciling assigned accounts, researching discrepancies, and recommending sound corrections to ensure timely and accurate forecasting and report submissions
  • Ensure all financial reporting processes follow organizational standards, and deadlines are consistently met
  • Maintain detailed accounting records to ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Government Accounting Standards Board (GASB), Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), grantor agreements, and organizational policies, as applicable
  • Perform grant-related post-award accounting functions such as reconciling accounts, initiating reimbursement/draw-down requests, forecasting, and preparing financial reports to ensure grant maximization and compliance
  • Administer the Attorney Loan Repayment Program by communicating with current and prospective participants, reviewing applications, verifying reimbursements, and submitting information to payroll within established deadlines
  • Oversee and administer the departmental fleet of around 80 vehicles by tracking vehicle assignments, arranging loaners, and ensuring timely maintenance
  • Analyzing vehicle utilization, lifecycle costs, maintenance reports and maintaining comprehensive vehicle records
  • Oversee all MCAO departmental and fixed assets by accounting for purchases, ensuring items are tagged, inventoried, reported on, and disposed of in accordance with standards
  • Prepare the department's Schedule of Expenditures for Federal Awards (SEFA) for inclusion in the County's Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR)
  • Prepare the departmental indirect cost allocation in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulation (CFR) and organizational requirements

  • Office setting in a high-volume, fast-paced environment
  • Requires extended periods of sitting while completing computer activities
  • May be required to drive a personal or County-owned vehicle to travel to and from various County locations
  • Teleworking or an alternate work arrangement is available after 6 months
