DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Dean of Student Affairs, the Associate Dean of Student Affairs/Director of Residence Life is the administrator of the residential life program at the college and is responsible for building and maintaining a positive, safe and secure, living/learning community. The Associate Dean of Student Affairs/Director of Residence Life is instrumental in the continued development of the administrative and programmatic organization of the college's residential life unit. The Associate Dean of Student Affairs/Director of Residence Life is an active partner in the College's educational enterprise and works collaboratively and creatively to establish a comprehensive living and learning environment at the College that is reflective of the College's philosophy and theme.

The Eighth College residential community houses approximately twenty-three hundred (at steady state) undergraduate students who reside in residence halls or apartments. The Associate Dean of Student Affairs/Director of Residence Life does not reside on campus, the positions supervises three Assistant Directors and forty-six undergraduate para-professional staff who live in the Eighth College housing complex. The Residential Life office strives to build a positive and safe living-learning environment in which students can grow and develop. The staff provide programs and services that support the academic mission of the University by enhancing the educational, personal, cultural, and social development of students.

The Associate Dean of Student Affairs/Director of Residence Life works with the Dean of Student Affairs, the College Provost, and other college administrators regarding residential life issues. Direct responsibilities include unit operations management, annual budget development and administration, professional and paraprofessional staff training, supervision and management, student educational and social development, program development, student judicial education, and student counseling The Associate Dean of Student Affairs/Director of Residence Life also facilitates collaboration with other units of the college, Housing Dining & Hospitality Services and other campus resources to develop, support and implement safety and security policies and procedures as well as provide on-call emergency response for the residential community. The Associate Dean of Student Affairs/Director of Residence Life is engaged in strategic planning for the unit in collaboration with the Dean of Student Affairs, Provost and/or College senior staff, promotes the UC San Diego Principles of Community, and directs the department toward meeting the goals outlined in the Strategic Plan. This position requires high levels of and demonstrated experience in independent thinking, decision-making, diplomacy, policy development and implementation, problem analysis, and strategic planning.

Supervises Student Life & Development Specialists and support staff, and administers a component of a Student Affairs or Student Life program. Independently oversees day-to-day operations, and determines goals and performance expectations of subordinates. Makes recommendations concerning improvements of program / function to the manager.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Strong knowledge of University and departmental policies, processes, and procedures. In-depth knowledge of, and ability to interpret University policies and regulations that affect students and to develop and implement residential living policies and procedures consistent with and complimentary to the UC San Diego Student Code of Conduct and Housing Contract.

  • Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs. Skills in monitoring / assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements. Knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences. Demonstrated experience with computer software applications. Willingness and commitment to regularly maintain and update technology skills as required.

  • Strong skills in active listening, critical thinking, negotiation, reasoning, organizing, written and verbal communication; multitasking and intercultural competence and uses these skills to develop original ideas to solve problems.

  • Strong skills in project and program management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do. Advanced abilities in project management, problem identification and reasoning skills. Demonstrated high level of organization and problem solving skills to plan, implement and evaluate comprehensive projects and programs. Ability to delegate and coordinate complex tasks with attention to both overall goals and specific details. Skill in applying organizational development, team building, problem solving, and conflict resolution techniques in group situations.

  • Advanced knowledge of Student Affairs / Student Life specialization. Knowledge and understanding of national practices and trends in residential life and on-campus housing which affect higher education and student development. Skill in conceptualizing, analyzing, and interpreting broad educational issues, policies and regulations. Demonstrated knowledge of the history and current trends in student leadership and development theories, models, and philosophies. Proven skills to effectively organize learning opportunities that are consistent with student stages of development.

  • Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Demonstrated effective interpersonal, group, and cross-cultural communication and leadership skills. Skill in leading, and promoting leadership within diverse populations, particularly students. Skill in public speaking and presentations. Ability to lead and facilitate effective group activities

  • Advanced knowledge of risk assessment principles along with the ability to evaluate risks and the likelihood of consequences.

  • Strong leadership skills to motivate employees and influence attitudes and behaviors.

  • Demonstrated experience interacting in sensitive situations with individuals from a wide range of academic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds. Knowledge and skill in making sound independent judgments, maintaining calm and professional demeanor, decorum and presence of mind to promote civil and professional communication.

  • Ability to recruit, interview, hire, manage and supervise effectively the work of others including setting and meeting performance goals, conducting performance appraisals and providing training. Demonstrated supervisory, leadership, and personnel management skills to effectively administer and manage through others, including knowledge in staff organization development and evaluation.

  • Familiarity with and understanding of student needs and concerns. Ability to research, evaluate, assess and find solutions for changing student needs.

  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance. Proven leadership skills with the ability to act independently and exercise sound judgment with the acumen and sensitivity to identify those decisions and activities which require higher level consultation and/or group collaboration.

  • Advanced ability to develop original ideas to solve problems. Demonstrated knowledge of organizational development, group dynamics, strategies for change and principles of community.

  • Skill to effectively communicate clear and concise policy statements, reports, and memoranda on subjects of a sensitive nature with the ability to provide well-reasoned arguments verbally, in writing, and electronically.

  • Theoretical and experiential knowledge in budget development, planning and financial management or an equivalent combination of education and strong demonstrated management experience.

  • Proven ability to help students reflect on and understand community living concepts by processing critical incidents they experience.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $71,600 - $127,400 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $34.29 - $61.02
