Symetra has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Clinical Care Consultant!

About the role

This role supports the success of Clinical Operations by delivering timely, accurate clinical insights to the Claims team. You will help ensure claim and appeal decisions are handled with independence, consistency, and fairness.

What you will do



  • Conduct clinical assessments for short- and long term disability claims, explaining how medical findings relate to function and documented restrictions/limitations.
  • Provide written and verbal clinical input through walk ins, file reviews, team sessions, and consultation hours.
  • Recommend independent medical exams (IME), functional capacity evaluations (FCE), or peer reviews, and document outcomes.
  • Stay current on medical practices, technology, and clinical guidelines, applying them appropriately.
  • Document claim files clearly, consistently, and professionally.
  • Identify cases where additional medical insight may change the claim outcome or direction.
  • Obtain information directly from medical providers through phone outreach or written communication.
  • Guide Claims staff on what medical documentation is needed to evaluate function, restrictions, limitations, and expected duration.

Compensation

Salary Range: $72,700 - $121,100 plus eligibility for annual bonus program

Who you are

  • High school diploma required; nursing degree from an accredited institution required.
  • Active RN license(s).
  • At least 2 years of direct clinical care experience in an acute care setting.
  • Minimum 1 year of clinical consulting experience in a disability claims environment.
  • Strong assessment, problem solving, and care planning skills.
  • Understanding of CPT, ICD 9, and ICD 10 coding within claims contexts.
  • Experience with STD/LTD and a range of clinical impairments.
  • Strong analytical and decision making abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable interpreting clinical terminology and practice standards.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast paced, deadline driven environment.
