SUMMARY:
Coordinates the flow of patient activity and information on the unit/clinic, based on currently approved policies and procedures recognized by the Hospital. Functions as a member of the Health Care Team under the direction of Clinical Manager or designee to perform a variety of clerical duties. The Unit Secretary is responsible for good interpersonal and clerical skills, which promote quality patient care. The core Success Factors include: Instill Trust and Value Differences Patient and Community Focus and Collaborate RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists principal investigator with development, design and data management specifics of studies. Tabulates and reviews data for publication and reporting. Also assists in developing research protocols and intervention plans. Supervises non-MD/PhD research staff, including authoritatively recommending selection and as necessary provides for discipline up to and including recommendation for termination. Orients, trains, assigns work to, counsels and evaluates performance of assigned research staff. Assumes primary responsibility for the communication of Brown University Health policies and procedures for research and administrative functions within the assigned research laboratory setting. Ensures adherence to same. May develop and implement laboratory-specific procedures with the approval of principal investigator and/or research administration. Organizes and implements protocol of the project(s), provides direct services as outlined by the respective grant criteria. Contacts individuals both internal and external to the hospital to provide professional consultation within area of expertise and to exchange information. Participates in the development of coordinated budget. Resolves problems and monitors monthly laboratory expenses; reviews and resolves budget variances by providing explanation of same to appropriate individuals. Within Brown University Health and department guidelines orders capital equipment as approved in budget. Maintains quality assurance, safety, environmental, infection and radiation control in accordance with established hospital and department policies and objectives. Coordinates and/or conducts annual training in these areas. Maintains and enhances professional expertise through educational opportunities. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: BASIC KNOWLEDGE: High school graduate or General Equivalency Diploma. Effective interpersonal communications skills. Able to multi-task in order to perform a variety of complex clerical duties. Basic computer skills required. Basic knowledge of medical terminology preferred. Read, write legibly and speak English. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. EXPERIENCE: Preferred WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Exposed to normal patient care environment with frequent standing, walking, and sitting.
