Job Summary

The Senior Business Manager provides business support to for all areas in the Department of Nutrition and Food Services (NFS) and oversight of retail services (e.g. gift shops) at the UCSF Medical Center. This scope includes operations at 5 major sites and more than 30 satellite locations. Major duties include development and monitoring of department budget of more than $41M including individual cost center budgets, conducting complex analyses of cost benefits, process improvements, and information technology. The Senior Business Manager is also accountable for designing, implementing, and sustaining critical systems, programs, and controls that ensure financial integrity and operational efficiency. These include financial reporting and performance monitoring, cash handling, purchasing, production planning, forecasting, and inventory management. In addition, the role provides oversight and strategic direction for retail services operations, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and high standards of fiscal stewardship across the enterprise. This scope includes oversight of all human resource related activities: processing employee action forms, employee file maintenance, providing payroll system and leave of absence system guidance to employees. The position manages 3 gift shop managers, a business office supervisor and a financial analyst and assumes accountability for decisions made by subordinates. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve goals results in additional costs and personnel, and serious delays in department schedules.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $143,900 - $215,800 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Health Department of Nutrition and Food Services is a high-performing, nationally recognized food and nutrition service operation. The department comprises three divisions:
Food Service: Includes room service-style patient dining, retail food operations such as cafes and quick-service coffee outlets, a large-scale catering and conference services program, and supporting entities including culinary services, food procurement, and a business office.
Nutrition Services: Provides inpatient and outpatient nutrition care for adults and pediatrics and operates an accredited dietetic internship program.
Retail Services: UCSF Health's gift and specialty shops.
These entities are primarily based across UCSF Health's six hospital campuses and affiliated clinics throughout the Bay Area. The department employs approximately 400 FTEs and manages an overall operating budget of $50 million.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, finance, accounting, or related area and / or 3-5 years experience within the healthcare industry, or an equivalent combination of experience / training / education.
  • Broad knowledge of the organization's processes, protocols and procedures with a focus on budget, account and fund management and / or personnel management under labor contract(s) and personnel policy.
  • Broad knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning; and / or accounting and payroll.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to influence / persuade all levels of staff.
  • Skills in organization and customer service to effectively manage multiple important priorities. Proven ability to organize department work functions in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Broad knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Skills to work collaboratively with other locations.
  • Proven skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution.
  • Demonstrated management and conflict resolution skills to effectively lead and motivate others.
  • Knowledge of state and university regulatory requirements
