The Position

The Port of Portland is hiring an Emergency Management Intern!

Join the Emergency Management team at Portland International Airport and gain hands-on experience supporting emergency planning, training, and exercises that help keep the airport and Port community ready for any situation.

Your role: You'll support the Port's Emergency Management team by assisting with the development and review of emergency plans, coordinating training and exercises, and helping strengthen preparedness across the organization. You'll also collaborate with internal teams and regional partners to support coordinated emergency response efforts.

To be considered for this intern position you must be a current student enrolled in a metro-area school for the duration of employment. Spring 2026 graduates will not be eligible for this internship unless documentation of continued educational classes (graduate school documentation related to the field) can be provided at the time of application.

Duration: Expected sunset date on or around May 31, 2027, with full-time work during school breaks and part-time during the school year.

Compensation is determined by school year and experience.

Essential Job Duties

  • Draft, review, and update emergency response plans that support preparedness across the Port.
  • Assist with the design, coordination, and evaluation of emergency management exercises.
  • Support the delivery of emergency preparedness training for Port employees and stakeholders.
  • Assist with Incident Management training initiatives.
  • Participate in meetings with internal teams and regional emergency management partners to support coordinated preparedness and response efforts.


Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Oregon/Washington college or university and seeking a degree in a related field.
  • Student must also provide current unofficial transcript at time of application.
  • Maintenance of a minimum 2.5 grade point average and continued enrollment in classes pertinent to the internship is required.
  • Must successfully pass and maintain clearance of a comprehensive Criminal History Records Check and a Security Threat Assessment for a PDX Security Badge, are required.
Demonstrated Knowledge and Skills
  • Demonstrate commitment to valuing differences among individuals and a passion for being inclusive.
  • Focus on safety improvements, and comply with safety and health policies and procedures.
  • Show the utmost respect for others and act as a team player.
  • Basic understanding of emergency management principles.
  • Advance knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with technical writing.
  • Able to make presentations to various stakeholders.
  • Ability to work across the public safety spectrum (police, fire, airport communications and aviation security) to implement emergency management initiatives.


Supplemental and Selection Information

SELECTION PROCESS (tentative schedule):

  1. A minimum qualification evaluation of education, training, and experience of submitted application packets will take place by Human Resources the week of March 23, 2026.

  2. A Subject Matter Expert (SME) Panel will perform an evaluation of experience and training taken from your employment application materials including any responses to the supplemental questionnaire.

  3. Our goal is to schedule panel interviews with candidates that successfully passed the SME evaluation week of April 6, 2026. The successful candidate will be notified after interviews are complete, with a tentative start date in June 2026.
