| Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Planetarium serves as an academic support program and community outreach project that provides instructional support to university faculty, encourages elementary and secondary students to develop the academic skills and interest to pursue post-secondary education, and promote public interest in and awareness of science phenomenon. |
| Description of Work |
Prepare, present, and schedule planetarium lectures and shows for the general
public, schools, special events, and the university community.
Assist the faculty of the university in augmenting their course curriculum by utilizing
planetarium presentations, the facility, and other educational resources to enhance
student growth and development.
Produce educational enrichment programs for PK-12 grade students that correlate
with state and national curriculum competencies.
Monitor the maintenance and/or repair of mechanical, optical, and electronic
equipment.
Develop and design marketing materials for the planetarium to promote an academic
interest and awareness of science and astronomy.
Track and monitor the planetarium's budget/expenditures and perform an inventory of
the equipment.
Prepare reports, proposals, progress reports, and grant applications for the
planetarium, and maintain records of the visiting audiences. |
| Competencies/Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Required in this Position |
Knowledge of optical, electronic and mechanical equipment.
Ability to operate a digital full-dome planetarium projection system and surround audio system.
Ability to produce planetarium shows.
Skilled in computer techniques, graphics, video editing, etc.
Ability to communicate orally and in writing and work effectively with others.
Strong and demonstrated interest in community outreach |
| License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation |

| Management Preferences |
Bachelor's degree (major/minor) in Physics or Astronomy with at least three years of experience in the production, preparation, presentation and operation of planetarium programming; or a Master's degree with one year of experience; or an equivalen combination ofeducation/experience. Operation of full dome digital planetarium system preferred. |
