Class A Surface Quality Analyst

A Class A Surface Modeler Quality Checker (also referred to as a Class A Surfacing Quality Inspector, Reviewer, or QC Specialist in automotive contexts) plays a critical role in the automotive design and manufacturing pipeline. This position focuses on verifying and ensuring that digital Class A surfaces-the visible, high-aesthetic exterior and interior body panels (e.g., vehicle bodywork, bumpers, dashboards)-meet the highest standards of visual perfection, mathematical precision, smoothness, continuity, and production readiness before they proceed to tooling, manufacturing, or final approval.

Class A surfaces demand flawless reflections, curvature continuity (typically G2/G3 or higher), no visible flaws under light, and compatibility with engineering constraints while preserving the original design intent. The quality checker acts as a gatekeeper, often using specialized software analysis tools rather than just modeling from scratch (though strong modeling knowledge is usually required).

The Class A Surface Modeler Quality Checker inspects, analyzes, and validates digital surface models created in tools like Autodesk Alias, ICEM Surf, or similar CAD software. The goal is to confirm surfaces achieve Class A quality (highest aesthetic and manufacturability standards) by identifying deviations in curvature, highlights, continuity, gaps, fillets, flanges, and overall feasibility for production. This role supports design studios, surfacing teams, and engineering in automotive OEMs or tier-1 suppliers.

Key Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Perform detailed quality inspections and audits of Class A surface models at various development stages (concept, feasibility, production release)
  • Evaluate surface quality using diagnostic tools: curvature combs, zebra/isophote analysis, highlight/shadow reviews, Gaussian maps, reflection lines, and deviation checks
  • Verify surface continuity (G0/G1/G2/G3), smoothness, and aesthetic behavior under simulated lighting/reflections (often in tools like VRED or Key Shot)
  • Check compliance with design intent, technical/attribute requirements (e.g., panel gaps, flushness, manufacturability), and cross-system integration (compatibility between adjacent surfaces/parts)
  • Identify and document surface defects, imperfections, or feasibility issues; provide detailed feedback, markup sheets, or critique documentation to modelers/designers
  • Participate in review meetings (e.g., design critiques, surface progression loops, K-Loops) and collaborate with industrial designers, Class A modelers, engineers, and prototype teams
  • Ensure surfaces support downstream processes: tooling creation, physical prototyping, metrology, and final production quality
  • Use quality control processes to anticipate manufacturing challenges (e.g., sink marks, weld lines, distortion) and recommend fixes early
  • Maintain records of inspections, deviations, and resolutions; contribute to quality standards and best practices
  • Occasionally support or mentor surface creation standards when needed

Basic Qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree in Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Design, or equivalent
  • 3+ years in Class A surfacing or related quality/validation roles in automotive design (OEM or supplier preferred)
  • Excellent eye for form/aesthetics, attention to detail, strong communication for feedback, ability to work in cross-functional teams
  • Alias (Autodesk), ICEM Surf, CATIA, Rhino, or similar; experience with visualization tools (VRED, DeltaGen) for reflection/highlight checks
  • Knowledge of automotive design processes, GD&T basics, and manufacturing constraints; experience with physical model correlation or metrology tools (e.g., CMM, laser scanning)
  • Deep understanding of NURBS/Bezier surface modeling principles
  • Proficiency in surface quality evaluation tools within Alias, ICEM Surf, CATIA, or equivalent
  • Strong knowledge of surface continuity levels, curvature analysis, and aesthetic evaluation techniques

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Specialized training in Class A surfacing is a plus
