Job Summary

The Career Advisor position provides individual advising to students and alumni concerning the discovery of career interests, seeking and securing experiential and professional opportunities, and navigating the transition from college to career. They also conduct workshops on a variety of career readiness topics and assist with the execution of career related events.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Advises students and alumni on variety of career readiness topics, including major/career choice, professional document development, interview skills, graduate school planning, and professional dress.
  • Interprets results of relevant career assessment instruments to assist clients in matching their personality, interests, values, and skills to career options.
  • Builds relationships with students, alumni, and employers to enhance career-related opportunities and partnerships.
  • Partners with faculty, student organizations, and campus stakeholders to embed career readiness skill development into the student experience.
  • Develops and delivers trainings, workshops, and presentations that enhance students' understanding of career related topics, such as resume writing, interview, and job searching.
  • Networks with regional employers to build relationships and increase knowledge of current workforce recruiting, hiring, and market trends.
  • Promotes, networks, and participates in the execution of career fairs/events.

Other Duties:

  • Assists in the supervision of peer career advisors and other student assistants.
  • Provides project management support for campus clothing closet, Azul's Attire.
  • Collaborates with faculty and other campus departments to develop new and innovative career readiness programs.
  • May instruct career exploration or career preparation courses.
  • Develops and updates department career advising resources and materials.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • This position requires either six years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
  • Experience delivering one-on-one or group career advising or coaching related to career exploration, job and internship searches, networking, and graduate school preparation.
  • Experience operating a personal computer and proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree from an accredited institution in Counseling, Higher Education, Student Affairs, Student Personnel, or related field.
  • Two years experience providing one-on-one career development advising, including guidance on career pathways and skill development.
  • Experience teaching a University-level course.
  • Experience using a Career Services Management software.
  • Nationally recognized career services related credentialing.

  • Knowledge of policies, procedures, and regulations pertaining to the position.
  • Knowledge of current workforce trends and employer expectations.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively in a team environment.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups.
  • Ability to provide one-on-one and group career advising or coaching to college students and alumni.
  • Ability to develop and facilitate workshops, presentations, and classroom collaborations.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, apply, and explain personnel policies and procedures.
  • Ability to manage and coordinate assignments to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently to complete assignments.
  • Ability to provide professional customer service.
  • Proven ability to think strategically and approach challenges with creativity.
  • Demonstrated track record of reliability, meeting goals, and holding oneself accountable.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience working effectively across teams.
