Physician - Associate Cardiac Surgeon - Royal Oak

The Clinical Associate in Cardiac Surgery position at William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak, with secondary assignments to Troy and Dearborn campuses, is a 12-to-24-month position designed to allow for advanced and subspecialty exposure in complex state of the art cardiac surgery including advanced aortic reconstruction, minimally invasive valvular procedures, mechanical circulatory support/ECMO and robotic procedures. The successful candidate will have completed an ACGME-accredited cardiothoracic surgery residency and be either ABTS eligible or certified. The individual will require a high degree of emotional intelligence with excellent conflict resolution skills and be able to function in a highly matrixed service line. The Associate will be expected to be fully engaged in clinical, academic and teaching goals of the organization. The Associate will have independent operative privileges and will be expected to assist with daily surgical procedures at all three CHE hospitals performing cardiac surgery cases at the direction of the CHE Regional Division Chief of Cardiac Surgery. As such, the service line will benefit from improved patient access, enhanced quality outcomes and improved patient throughput and efficiency.

Cardiac Surgery Junior Associate Responsibilities:

The Cardiac Surgeon Junior Associate will be required to support cardiac surgery cases across all phases of care (evaluation, surgical, post-operative and post-discharge) and at all three CHE campuses where cardiac surgeries are performed.

Additional clinical and other responsibilities include:
  • Participate in ECMO program with call responsibilities as determined by the CHE Regional Division Chief of Cardiac Surgery

  • Participate in mitral valve robotic program at WBUH across entire episode of care, performing consultations, establishing appropriate work up and assisting at surgery with graduated levels of responsibility commensurate with experience

  • Participate in durable LVAD program

  • Participate in advanced aortic percutaneous and open procedures

  • Assist with periodic weekend and night call

  • Participate in academic activities of the service line culminating with podium presentations at regional, national and international venues

  • Participate in Quality Improvement initiatives of the service line

  • Participate in education activities of the service line, with periodic lectures to nursing staff, Operating Room staff, Advanced Practice Providers and other clinical team members, while promoting excellence in education

  • Promote the mission, vision and values of the service line and organization, while fostering a supportive and collaborative working environment

  • Participate in regular clinical conferences (i.e., Heart Team, Valve Conference, etc.)

  • Attend department meetings as required by the Regional Division Chief of Cardiac Surgery

  • Ensure clinical activities are performed in accordance with clinical guidelines, appropriate use criteria, and department policy

  • Complete all clinical documentation in a timely manner consistent with hospital, payor and regulatory requirements

Competency:

The Associate's progress will be assessed through direct observations by the surgical faculty. Written feedback will be provided on a regular cadence as determined by the Regional Division Chief of Cardiac Surgery, with follow up as indicated.
