Training and Certification is responsible for the training of locomotive engineers, conductors and assistant conductors and other functions within the Transportation Division. The department conducts and oversees training programs that enable employees to meet regulatory mandates and develop necessary job skills.

Reporting to the Director, Workforce Dev & Continuous Learning-Trans, the Sr Operations Trainer -ASLE will assist in the training and supervision of Locomotive Engineer Candidates and Certified Locomotive Engineers to ensure their compliance with Metra schedules and standards established by the Training and Certification Department, as well as Safety Rules and 49 CFR 240 and 242 regulations governing the certification of locomotive engineers and conductors.

The primary duties include: Oversee the development of the training programs, which include planning, designing and conducting highly specialized training programs for locomotive engineers, candidate/student engineers, assistant conductors and conductors. Conduct remedial and/or Return to Service training when a locomotive engineer returns to work following an extended leave or rules violation. Simulate a wide variety of potential situations confronting engineers and covering operating rules regulating safe, efficient and economic operation of locomotives in the Metra system. Monitor, critique and evaluate candidate performance through the use of the locomotive simulator in a controlled setting. Monitor the continuing Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) mandated education of currently certified locomotive engineers, providing classroom instruction and on-the-job tutoring, when necessary. Coordinate team's day-to-day activities, assign tasks/projects and monitor
performance, and provide guidance and training, but is not a supervisor. Promote safe work practices and maintain and foster a safe work environment. Incumbents work under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow. This position is subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing. Perform otherrelated duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act, not the Social Security Administration.

Requirements
  1. Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  2. Must be currently certified as a locomotive engineer, with a minimum of four (4) years experience as a locomotive engineer.
  3. Must have two(2) years of indirect supervisory experience that includes three (3) of the following responsibilities: day-to-day employee management, assigning tasks, providing guidance and training, monitoring performance, providing conflict management, budgeting, hiring, disciplinary and/or termination.
  4. Must be free of decertification for a period of four (4) years.
  5. Must have excellent knowledge of 49 CFR 240 and 242 certification.
  6. Must have functional knowledge of General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR) and Metra's Safety Rules.
  7. Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
  8. Must have good verbal/written communication and organizational skills.
  9. Excellent project management skills.
  10. Locomotive Engineer Certification
  11. Current and valid driver's license.
  12. Ability to stand, walk, and/or sit, for extended periods of time.
  13. Hearing/Visual acuity, far/near, depth perception, field of vision, color vision.
  14. Must be able to operate a vehicle.
  15. Must be willing to travel within Metra's 6-county region.
  16. Must be available to work flexible hours in the early morning, late afternoon, evenings, or weekends.
  17. Must be available to work any shift at any location.

Preferred:

  1. Experience with the development and facilitation of training.
  2. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
