Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service.

Mechanical coordinates and oversees the repair, inspection, cleaning, rebuilding, replacing and maintenance of 1,180 pieces of rolling stock used in commuter service. The department's goal is to provide safe, clean and reliable service while maintaining the fleet to the standards of the Federal Railroad Administration, Association of American Railroads, American Public Transit Association and the original equipment manufacturers.The Mechanical Department is also responsible for overseeing Metra's fleet of 463 trucks and automobiles. The department employs 650 people.

Reporting to the Manager, Quality Assurance and Materials, the Senior Materials Coordinator inspects components and material to verify conformance with specifications, oversees the assembly of kits and systems, coordinates sequential distribution of components and systems to production line work stations, and coordinates distribution of field modification material to each of Metra's five (5) Mechanical divisions. This position also coordinates the disposition and tracking of defective parts and material working closely with manufacturers and vendors to ensure material delivery dates match overhaul production schedules.Receive incoming orders, inspect coach and locomotive parts and systems; verify articles received against packing lists and purchase requisitions, and note discrepancies or damaged material to verify conformance with Metra and OEM specifications. Work closely with Shop Superintendents and Project Managers to ensure sequential distribution of components and systems from the Capital Storage Facilities to production line work stations for both coach and locomotive overhaul programs located at 47th Street Diesel Shop, 49th Street Car Shop, and KYD Car Shop according to work task priorities and production schedules. Store equipment on designated shelves, racks or in other storage areas; ensures storage area is in a clean and orderly condition. Coordinate with vendors on defective material and keep the Project Manager informed of developments that might substantially affect project schedules. Conduct inventory of all capital parts; audits matching physical inventory in Maximo, reconciles discrepancies, and make recommendations to correct system deficiencies.

Incumbents work under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow.Limited outside environmental conditions due to location of material storage. May require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, verbal communication, hearing, and repetitive motions.Employees may perform other
related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act, not the Social Security Administration.

Requirements
  1. Bachelor's degree in Business Management, Engineering or related field OR in lieu of degree, any combination of education and experience in materials management, logistics, manufacturing, and/or railroad operations that equals four (4) years.
  2. In addition to #1, must have three (3) years of materials and parts handling, inventory control, manufacturing, railroad operations or related experience.
  3. Knowledge of materials management.
  4. Knowledge of warehouse safety procedures.
  5. Knowledge of Federal Transportation Authority (FRA) and Association of American Railroads (AAR) Regulations and Standards, and as they apply to coach and locomotive material, parts, and systems is preferred.
  6. Good verbal and written communication skills.
  7. Good computer skills.
  8. Good organizational and time management skills.
  9. Ability to read basic schematics and drawings.
  10. Ability maintain records and prepare simple reports.
  11. Ability to use basic hand tools.
  12. Ability to handle multiple tasks, establish priorities, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  13. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  14. Ability to stand, walk, and/or sit, for extended periods of time.
  15. Hearing/Visual acuity, far/near, depth perception, field of vision, color vision.
  16. Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds.
