| Primary Function of Organizational Unit |
The Julius L. Chambers Biomedical/Biotechnology Research Institute (
BBRI) is a 40,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art research facility that is dedicated to expanding the University's research capacity, particularly in the biomedical and biotechnology areas. The
BBRI is a broad based multi-disciplinary research and training institute. The mission of the
BBRI is to conduct multidisciplinary and inter-institutional research focused on health issues that disproportionately affect minority and underserved groups while providing students with research experiences that will enhance their access to careers in the biomedical sciences. |
| Primary Purpose of Position |
A full time Program Manager (PM) will be responsible for operational and strategic aspects of the
NIH funded
NCCU Biomedical Engineering, Imaging, and Technology Acceleration (
BEITA) program. |
| Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities |
This role primarily focuses on leading the day-to-day operations, strategic growth, and research development of a Bioprinting Center, including
SOP development, interdisciplinary research support, staff supervision, training, and process improvement. It also includes oversight of bioprinting instrumentation, facilities, safety protocols, and scheduling to ensure high operational standards. Administratively, the position manages budgets, reporting, compliance, stakeholder engagement, and performance metrics, requiring strong project management, technical expertise, and experience in advanced biomedical research environments. |
| Minimum Education/Experience |
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biotechnology, or related science/engineering field (PhD or MBA preferred).
- 5+ years of program/project management in engineering, life sciences, advanced research, or comparable environments (bioprinting or additive manufacturing experience is highly desirable).
- Demonstrated technical knowledge of bioprinting equipment, biomaterials, cell culture workflows, and lab safety protocols.
- Expertise in creating and managing SOPs, compliance programs, and biosafety procedures (biosafety committee collaboration experience preferred).
- Experience supporting or leading multi-disciplinary academic research teams, preferably within life sciences or biomedical engineering.
- Advanced project management skills, including milestone tracking, resource planning, and budget management.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities-capable of building and maintaining relationships with faculty, sponsors, students, and industry representatives.
- Strong proficiency with project management tools (e.g., MS Project, Asana), financial tracking, and reporting.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in recruiting, program development, and team leadership.
- Experience in grant administration, scientific writing, and presenting technical information to varied audiences.
Preferred Background:
- Certified Project Management Professional (PMP) or similar credential.
- Previous experience in a university core facility, translational research center, or advanced manufacturing environment.
- Authorship in peer-reviewed research or technical publications.
- Experience in faculty recruitment, training, or outreach programming.

- Oversee daily operations and strategic growth of the Bioprinting Center, reporting to the Center Directors and relevant university leadership.
- Develop, implement, and regularly review Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) aligned with regulatory requirements and best practices in bioprinting.
- Support interdisciplinary research, grant administration, collaborative project development, and industrial partnerships.
- Coordinate training sessions, seminars, and outreach activities to promote research excellence.
- Lead process improvements, risk mitigation, and assessment of center productivity and impact.
- Supervise staff and manage resource procurement, installation, and maintenance of specialized equipment.

- Facilitate communication with internal and external stakeholders, including university departments, sponsors, industry partners, and regulatory agencies.
- Community and Stakeholder Engagement: The PM will liaise with external stakeholders, including industry partners, RTP collaborators, and community organizations, ensuring that partnerships are fostered and goals are communicated effectively.
- Prepare and present reports, presentations, and documentation for administrative, grant, and scientific audiences.
- Monitoring and Evaluation: The PM will work with the PDs to develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs) that measure the program's success. This includes tracking publications, patents, student engagement, and other outcomes that demonstrate progress toward NIH and institutional goals.
