Job Summary: Shannon & Wilson is seeking qualified Environmental Scientist for an opening in our Fairbanks office. The position is expected to continue through the busy field season, with opportunities for winter work depending on workload, performance, and business requirements. Responsibilities:
- Comprehensive environmental consulting that includes planning, data assessment, reporting, travel and field work, and sample collection.
- Assist with review, evaluation, and interpretation of environmental data and prepare summary reports.
- Interact and communicate with clients, vendors, and staff at all levels in a professional manner.
- Collect field data in an organized and concise manner, consistent with corporate and client standard operating procedures and work plans, and that are in accordance with regulatory guidance.
- Perform fieldwork activities to include: soil, groundwater, soil vapor, surface water and other media sampling, as well as maintenance of monitoring equipment at various locations.
- Oversee subcontractors in the field.
- Follow Shannon & Wilson's Quality Assurance policy.
- Follow and promote Shannon & Wilson's Health & Safety and Loss Prevention policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Geology, Hydrology, Civil or Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or other Natural Science; 0 to 6 years of experience as an Environmental Scientist, Geologist or Geoscientist.
- Excellent writing, organizational, and communication skills.
- Personable, flexible, and professional demeanor.
- The ability to manage your schedule and work independently with the appropriate level of supervision.
- Basic computer skills: MS Word, Excel, required.
- The willingness and ability to travel (drive or fly) to project work sites throughout Alaska and to support the needs of other Shannon & Wilson offices.
- A valid driver license and insurable driving record.
- The ability to get a pass for access to military facilities.
- Critical thinking and analysis.
- This position requires the ability to lift up to 30+ pounds and involves physically demanding fieldwork in a variety of environments. Assignments may occur in remote or rural locations where housing accommodation is limited and may not align with typical commercial lodging standards, including shared housing or temporary facilities. Access to restaurants, grocery stores, or other services may be limited. Fieldwork may require extended walking over variable terrain, work across large project areas, and performance of duties in adverse weather conditions. Candidates must be capable of meeting the physical requirements of environmental field duties.
- The work environment will vary greatly depending on the nature of tasks assigned, this position will occasionally involve local and out-of-state travel and may require work outside of normal business hours (evenings and weekends) as needed.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience with or coursework in ArcGIS.
- Familiarity with ADEC contaminated-site regulations.
- Familiarity with fate and transport of contaminants in soil and groundwater.
- Experience with or knowledge of drilling techniques, soil sampling, and monitoring well installation and sampling.
- Experience sampling soil, groundwater, and other media at contaminated sites.
- Experience in hazardous waste and hazardous materials management.
- Experience with environmental remediation technologies.
- Experience with statistical analyses.
- 40-hour HAZWOPER training.
- Knowledge of RCRA, CERCLA, OSHA and other federal regulations.
- Meet the requirements of an ADEC Qualified Environmental Professional or Sampler, as defined by 18 Alaska Administrative Code 75.333.
Level Placement Typically, depending on an applicant's education, experience, other qualifications they possess, if they are a fit for the company and local office culture, and the current business needs, an Entry-Level Environmental Scientist typically would be placed at a Shannon & Wilson Professional I, II, III, or IV level.
