Job Description
General Purpose of Job: Assist the pathologist with all aspects of forensic and hospital autopsies, including, but not limited to: evisceration, photography, radiography, identification. Admit and release bodies from morgue. Perform death investigations, primarily in follow-up role, but will include some death scene investigation. Essential Duties: This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
- Prepare bodies for autopsy
- Eviscerate bodies at autopsy including complex dissections
- Assist with identification of bodies
- Admit and release bodies from the morgue
- Collect evidence at autopsy and maintain chain of custody
- Obtain radiographic images of bodies
- Obtain toxicology specimens at autopsy
- Prepare death certificates for the physicians
- Request police reports, medical records, and other documents relevant to death investigations
- Perform follow-up interviews with family or other witnesses
- Review and correct investigative reports
- Represent the Office of the Medical Examiner at various community meetings
- Death scene investigation

| Education |
* High school diploma or equivalent and 6 years of medicolegal death investigation experience OR Associate's degree in forensic science or related field and 4 years of medicolegal death investigation experience OR Bachelor's degree in forensic science or related field and 2 years of medicolegal death investigation experience. * Registry-level certification from the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators preferred at time of appointment, required within two years of employment. * Autopsy assistant experience. Preferred. |

* Strong organizational, communication, and report writing skills * Knowledge of anatomy * Ability to work in an emotionally and physically taxing work environment. * Familiarity with Sparrow's database, MDI Log. Preferred. |
