UCF COM Population Health Sciences Laboratory:

The Department of Population Health Sciences brings together full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty, as well as additional faculty with secondary appointments, committed to conducting research on the individual, social, structural, and community factors that create health problems in the population and to design and implement interventions to promote health. Faculty research interests include all aspects of population health including adolescent health, cancer detection and outcomes, cardiovascular health, child and infant health, community-based participatory research, global health, health communication and messaging, health services research, HIV care and prevention, infection prevention and control, mental health, obesity, sexually transmitted diseases, substance use and cessation, including alcohol and tobacco use, suicidality, and violence among many others. Faculty expertise areas include anthropology, behavioral science, biostatistics, epidemiology, health communication, health education, implementation science, maternal and child health, public health law, and qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methodologies.

Our newly established laboratory led by Dr. Connor Martz in the Department of Population Health Science at the UCF College of Medicine examines how structural factors and social contexts influence health and aging trajectories across the life course, with a focus on the social and biological pathways that shape disparities in population health. Active projects draw on large, nationally representative longitudinal cohorts and secondary data sources to examine neighborhood- and school-level exposures in childhood and adolescence and their consequences for health in adulthood, including chronic disease risk, cognitive aging, and respiratory outcomes.

The Opportunity:

The Research Coordinator will support the day-to-day research activities of a newly established laboratory, with primary responsibilities spanning quantitative data management and analysis, scientific writing, and grant development and coordination. This work involves quantitative analysis of secondary data sources, integrating geocoded environmental exposure with innovative biomarkers of health and aging, including epigenetic and inflammatory measures. The Principal Investigator is committed to mentorship and professional development, and the Research Coordinator will have opportunities to contribute as a co-author on scientific manuscripts and to pursue independent research aligned with their interests.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare, manage, and analyze secondary datasets using R statistical software; responsibilities include data cleaning, variable construction, data visualization, and a range of quantitative analyses, including descriptive statistics and regression analyses.

  • Contribute to the preparation of scientific manuscripts, including drafting methods and results sections, providing feedback on introductions and discussion sections, and supporting submission and revision processes (e.g., editing proofs, formatting references).

  • Conduct systematic and narrative literature reviews to support manuscript preparation and grant development.

  • Support grant development and submission activities, including non-scientific grant sections (e.g., Protection of Human Subjects, Data Management and Sharing Plan) and coordinating with UCF staff on budgetary and submission-related tasks.

  • Perform other research-related administrative tasks as needed, including drafting IRB protocols and coordinating study amendments, preparing and managing data use agreements, and conference-related activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's or Master's degree and 2+ years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219(6).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in psychology, sociology, public health, or biomedical sciences.

  • Experience conducting quantitative analyses using R statistical software, including cross-sectional and longitudinal regression.

  • Skilled in conducting literature reviews.

  • Master's degree or higher in psychology, sociology, public health, biomedical sciences, or a related field.

The most successful candidates may possess the following qualities:

  • Strong scientific writing skills.
