Position Overview:

Ameresco has an opportunity for a Project Development Engineering Intern to join its Project Development Engineering team in a remote work environment. This is a paid internship (20-35 hours per week) scheduled for June-August.

The intern will support engineers engaged in the earlystage development of energy and infrastructure improvement projects, with a primary focus on mechanical and building systems analysis, engineering calculations, and technical documentation. When engineering workload is lighter, the intern may additionally support construction and project management coordination activities, providing broader exposure to how projects progress from development through implementation.

Responsibilities:

Primary Engineering

  • Support Project Development Engineers with technical analysis during project development

  • Assist with evaluation of mechanical and building systems, including:

    • HVAC systems (chillers, boilers, air handling units, pumps, and distribution systems)

    • Central plant and hydronic systems

    • Building automation and controls

  • Review drawings, specifications, and equipment schedules to support system evaluations

  • Evaluate technologies and equipment and assist with recommendations for specific applications

  • Analyze utility billing data and system performance data to support baseline development

  • Assist with engineering calculations related to equipment sizing, operating profiles, and system performance

  • Investigate and document potential system improvement and infrastructure upgrade opportunities

  • Support preparation of technical narratives, calculations, and backup documentation for feasibility studies and proposals

  • Compile, organize, and qualitycheck engineering calculations and assumptions using Excelbased tools

  • Participate in remote technical reviews and internal engineering coordination meetings

Secondary Construction & Project Management Support (As Needed)

When engineering workload allows, the intern may assist with the following support activities under supervision:

  • Provide administrative and technical support to Project Managers and Construction Managers

  • Assist with coordination between engineering, construction, vendors, and subcontractors for technical information and documentation

  • Support review and organization of subcontractor and vendor scopes, schedules, and cost data

  • Help maintain project schedules, logs, and development tracking tools

  • Assist with project documentation, record keeping, and internal reporting activities

  • Support preparation of materials for project meetings, progress updates, and internal reviews

  • Assist with compliancerelated documentation, quality control records, or safety documentation as required

  • Foster effective working relationships with internal team members and external partners throughout project phases

  • Perform other duties as required

These tasks are intended to supplement engineering responsibilities and provide exposure to downstream project execution.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline

  • Strong interest in mechanical systems, building systems, or applied engineering analysis

Additional Qualifications:

  • Coursework or experience related to HVAC systems, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, or heat transfer

  • Exposure or interest in largescale building or infrastructure projects involving upgrades, renovations, or retrofits

  • Proven ability to gather, validate, and analyze quantitative engineering data

  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel

  • Ability to clearly document engineering assumptions, calculations, and conclusions

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a structured remote environment

  • Ability to coordinate effectively with engineers, project managers, vendors, and subcontractors
