Position Summary and Responsibilities:


The Assistant Fleet Maintenance Manager is responsible for helping manage the daily activities of the fleet shop and to ensure that delivery equipment is repaired in an efficient, cost-effective and timely manner while staying in compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.


* DOT Compliance - Oversee tractor (power unit), trailer and related equipment maintenance, preventive maintenance, and major and minor repairs of all systems related to the life and functionality of the machinery.


* DVIR (Driver Vehicle Inspection Report) - Ensure that needed repairs recorded on this report have been addressed.


* Vehicle Maintenance - Work with sub-managers and lead persons to facilitate all repairs and coordination of repairs within the confines of the Branch Foods territories and shuttle locations.


* Expense Management - Work directly with the Fleet Manager to operate, maintain, repair and comply within local, state, and federal laws and guidelines, while minding budgetary constraints and improving efficiencies of spending dollars.


* Programs and Procedures - Develop, implement and track quantifiable results of procedures and programs that promote safety and expense control through asset management.


* Training and Support - Meet or exceed minimum training and support services for continuing knowledge and growth of all employees with shop-related duties.


a) DOT Compliance - Oversee tractor (power unit), trailer and related equipment maintenance, preventive maintenance, and major and minor repairs of all systems related to the life and functionality of the machinery.
* Ensure the maintenance of all files and documentation related to repairs, warranty, and factory recalls.
* Ensure the completion of outside service repair documentation and inspection to comply with listed requirements.
* Document and follow through all "Roadside Inspections and Out of Service" incidents.
* Arrange for immediate repairs of Out of Service vehicles during roadside inspections.
b) DVIR (Driver Vehicle Inspection Report) - Ensure that needed repairs recorded on this report have been addressed.
* Determine priority of reported issue and assign repair to a mechanic for final disposition (i.e., designate a deadline for repairs or put back into service until a later repair date is established).
* Document reinstatement if repairs are not immediately made and record why this decision was made.
* Oversee and determine accuracy of distribution of DVIR booklets each month, and retrieval of all previous month's booklets for mandatory retention, if applicable.
c) Vehicle Maintenance - Work with sub-managers and lead persons to facilitate all repairs and coordination of repairs within the confines of the Branch Foods territories and shuttle locations.
* Establish and maintain working relationships with outside repair facilities with interest in working within "fair market" pricing of needed services.
* Maintain records of repairs and expenses in the main shop as required for DOT compliance and for the purposes of "Useful Life Expense Tracking."
* Make recommendations for disposal of equipment that has exceeded its useful life.
d) Expense Management - Work directly with the Fleet Manager to operate, maintain, repair and comply within local, state, and federal laws and guidelines, while minding budgetary constraints and improving efficiencies of spending dollars.
* Be mindful and up-to-date on expense trends within the industry that impact the ability to operate within expected budget dollars.
e) Programs and Procedures - Develop, implement, and track quantifiable results of procedures and programs that promote safety and expense control through asset management.
* Ensure tire maintenance to eliminate or reduce blow-outs that result in downtime, expense, wasted DOT hours and reduced customer service.
* Implement fuel saving devices and equipment knowledge programs.
f) Shop Personnel Management - Recommend increases or decreases in head count for shop personnel.
* Generate and operate a friendly "open door" work environment that promotes job dedication, employee retention, and maximum performance from all mechanics and employees performing duties related to shop operations.
* Promote and implement pay increases with recommendations to management within established wage ranges.
g) Training and Support - Meet or exceed minimum training and support services for continuing knowledge and growth of all employees with shop-related duties.
* Ensure that requirements for each position are met in a timely manner (i.e., ensure that Class A CDL is maintained for certain positions; make sure that hazmat, lock-out/tag-out and all applicable OSHA, EPA and other mandatory training is completed and employees are recertified as needed).


MANAGERIAL DUTIES
* Supervise all fleet maintenance employees.


Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:


* Three or more years of fleet management experience required
* Food industry and/or manufacturing experience preferred
* Demonstrated ability to perform material and cost estimates
* Knowledge of OSHA guidelines and related codes required


* Ability to understand and enforce regulatory guidelines
* Knowledge of hazardous materials required
* Knowledge of environmental regulations
* Working knowledge of mobile refrigeration systems required
* Ability to develop and deliver training
* Knowledge of all DOT regulations
* Strong interpersonal and communications skills

Physical Requirements:



  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions
  • Must be willing to work odd hours and shift work (nights).
  • Must be able to walk extensively
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time usually for 8-10 hours
  • Must be able to bend at the waist; stoop to reach and squat to lift heavy items in a proper manner and operate lift assisting devices.
  • Must be able to lift 30-60 lbs repetitively and heavier items weighing up to 100 lbs occasionally.
  • Must have normal use of shoulders, arms, wrist, hands, feet and legs.
