Essential Job Duties
The Career Counselor will enhance the career and professional development of CALS students through individual career counseling and training programs. The Career Counselor's work will contribute to 4,500+ CALS students improving their career readiness, participating in experiential learning, and securing post-graduation opportunities aligning with their interests. The person in this position will report to the Director of CALS Career Services.

Primary Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Student Career and Professional Training

  • Provide individual career counseling and coaching to current CALS students and alumni within 12 months of graduation.
  • Present career and professional development presentations and workshops to groups of students through classes, clubs, and other group sessions.
  • Present career information that is tailored to specific CALS majors.
  • Coordinate with faculty members to provide career and professional development training to their students, including through tailored activities such as resume and mock interview events.
  • Coordinate networking and professional development events and programs to train students and link them with industry personnel.
  • Manage and grow the CALS Jumpstart career and professional development conference into a premier opportunity for CALS students.
  • Develop career-related resources and communicate up-to-date information on career opportunities specific to CALS majors.
  • Provide students with regular communication regarding career and professional development information, upcoming events, and career-related opportunities.
  • Consult with and support departmental efforts to enhance career and professional development in students.
  • Engage with alumni and industry professionals to support current CALS student career and professional development.
  • Train faculty in providing up-to-date career and professional development information to students.


Program Management

  • Manage the CALS Peer Career Coach (PCC) program, including recruiting, training, and supervising up to 12 PCCs per year.
  • Manage CALS student recruiting and participation in the Agriculture Future of America (AFA) program.
  • Oversee publication of a weekly email newsletter marketing career-related events and opportunities.
  • Provide support for the CALS Rural Works! program, including conducting internship site visits.
  • Serve as a representative of CALS Career Services as needed.

Other Responsibilities

  • Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.


Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant discipline, with a minimum of 2 years of related professional experience in higher education career services.
Other Required Qualifications

  • Ability to guide students in making informed career decisions.
  • Ability to work with a high level of independence and autonomy while simultaneously functioning in a collaborative framework.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Excellent writing, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Technology expertise - demonstrated ability to use and learn technologies used in career services, such as Google suite, Zoom, Mailchimp, Canva, Symplicity, and CRM systems.
  • Must be a creative, high-energy, and adaptable team player enthusiastic about supporting students in reaching their career goals.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree, or working toward completion of a masters degree, in career counseling or higher education, with 2+ years of experience in higher education career services.
Required License(s) or Certification(s)

  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Valid NC driver's license or the ability to obtain within 60 days of start.
