Position Summary

The Machining Engineer I turns engineering designs into precise, production-ready CNC programs. This position drives machining strategy, validates programs on the shop floor, and helps improve manufacturing performance from prototype through full-rate production.

Job Duties

  • Coordinate and optimize CNC programs for 3-, 4-, and 5-axis machines in production environments.
  • Review engineering drawings and identify machining approaches for complex components.
  • Identify tooling, speeds, and feeds to balance precision and efficiency requirements.
  • Coordinate programs through machine prove-outs and setup support during production.
  • Troubleshoot machining and production issues in real time on the shop floor.
  • Create and maintain clear manufacturing work instructions for daily operations.
  • Train and support machine operators as needed during ongoing production activities.
  • Assist with new equipment setup and production ramp-up initiatives.
  • Partner with engineering and manufacturing teams to improve processes and workflows.
  • Support tooling and fixture development for repeatability and performance improvements.
  • Other duties as assigned by management and department leadership.*

Educational and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Industrial Technology, Engineering, or a related field is required; or an Associate degree with a minimum of three years of machining application development experience is required; or a High School Diploma/GED with at least seven years of machining application development experience in the firearms industry is required. Previous machining engineering experience supporting new product introduction or production ramp-up within the Military or Automotive industry is preferred. Previous experience with CAM software is preferred.

Skills and Competencies

All FN America employees are expected to demonstrate accountability, collaboration, communication, customer focus, and innovation. Additional requirements of this position include:

  • Understanding of programming CNC machines (3-, 4-, and 5-axis).
  • Understanding of CAM software for CNC programming.
  • Understanding of machining processes, tooling, speeds, and feeds.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and define machining strategies.
  • Ability to validate CNC programs (prove-outs) and troubleshooting production issues.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and collaborate with engineering and production teams.
  • Familiarity with SW, Mori, Okuma, Mazak, Nakamura, Kitamura, or Haas Machines.
  • Familiarity with Siemens and Fanuc Controls.
  • Knowledge of tooling and fixture design.
  • Understanding of process improvement or lean manufacturing.

Tools

Microsoft Office, CAD Design (Auto CAD or CREO preferred), CNC Programming (MasterCam), ERP Systems - SAP or equivalent preferred.

Licenses/Certifications

Lean Green Belt or Black Belt preferred.

Working Conditions

May be exposed to dangerous machinery and loud noises with temperature extremes. Must be able to regularly lift and move up to 25 pounds unassisted.
