About the Job

Position Summary:
The Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Neurosciences at the University of Minnesota Medical School seeks Certified Orthoptists to join the faculty of the Orthoptic Training Program. This specialized clinical educator role focuses on instructing, mentoring, and evaluating trainees within the clinic and classroom settings. Faculty members are responsible for preparing the next generation of Certified Orthoptists while upholding academic excellence, scholarship, and professional service.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Teaching & Supervision: Provide direct, hands-on clinical supervision of orthoptic students and fellows during patient care hours; review patient histories, clinical skill execution, and sensorimotor evaluations.
  • Didactic Instruction: Prepare and deliver assigned lectures, seminars, and specialized workshops (e.g., Optics, Pharmacology, Strabismus) in alignment with the approved program syllabus and semester schedule.
  • Student Assessment: Administer and grade weekly written quizzes, practical skill assessments, and mid-year/comprehensive examinations; provide feedback for student logbooks and performance checklists.
  • Scholarship & Professional Service: Contribute annually to the profession by meeting at least one core criteria block:
    • Option A: Contribute to at least one peer-reviewed scholarly publication per year as an author, investigator, or examiner.
    • Option B: Complete at least two substantive examples of scholarship/service per year (e.g., creation of new curricula, regional/national presentations, serving as a journal peer-
      reviewer, or participating in professional society committees).
Qualifications

Qualifications & General Expectations:

  • High school completion or higher
  • Certification: Board certification as a Certified Orthoptist (CO) or international equivalent
  • Must maintain active Board Certification
  • Experience: Demonstrated ability and excellence in teaching clinical trainees
  • Rank: Eligible for appointment as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Neurosciences
  • Compliance: Must uphold the UMN Board of Regents Code of Conduct, demonstrating ethical behavior, professional boundaries, and sensitivity to cultural differences across all learners, staff, and patients. About the Department

The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Neurosciences (OVNS) has experts in all six subspecialty areas of ophthalmology. OVNS ophthalmologists are among the best in the world, treating the full spectrum of health issues relating to the eye, including the most complicated and challenging cases of glaucoma, cataracts, conditions of the retina and cornea, and ocular cancer. Approximately 71,000 patients are seen annually in OVNS treatment centers, and team members, from faculty to technicians to administrators, are dedicated to providing excellent patient care, discovering new treatments, and educating the next generation of eye care professionals.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Rate: $24.04 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
