Product Engineer IV Mechanical Wastewater

Sentry Equipment Corp.
United States, Utah, West Jordan
Jul 30, 2026

About the Role:

The Product Engineer IV - Mechanical Wastewater is a senior engineering role focused on the design, development, and continuous improvement of clarifier drive systems used in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment facilities. This position serves as a technical leader for a specialized product line involving low-speed, high-torque drive equipment, rotating machinery, gearboxes, bearings, shafting, and structural mechanical systems. The engineer will support engineer-to-order projects, develop new product enhancements, troubleshoot field performance issues, and drive initiatives that improve reliability, manufacturability, and cost effectiveness. Success in this role requires strong expertise in mechanical power transmission, rotating equipment, and product lifecycle management.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in mechanical product design and development, preferably within the wastewater or environmental engineering sector.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks or Creo for mechanical design and modeling.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles including materials science, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics.
  • Experience with product testing, validation methods, and failure analysis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Experience in wastewater treatment equipment, including clarifiers, thickeners, scrapers, or similar process equipment.
  • Experience with gearboxes, drive systems, torque transmission, and low-speed/high-torque applications.
  • Knowledge of AGMA, ANSI, or related mechanical design standards.
  • Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems.
  • Working knowledge of motors, VFDs, PLC interfaces, instrumentation, and industrial control systems.
  • Experience providing technical leadership or mentoring junior engineers.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and engineer clarifier drives, rotating equipment, and associated mechanical assemblies for wastewater treatment applications.
  • Develop engineer-to-order solutions tailored to customer requirements and operating conditions.
  • Perform mechanical calculations and equipment sizing for gearboxes, bearings, shafts, seals, torque arms, and structural members.
  • Analyze loads, torque, wear, and fatigue to ensure long-term product performance and reliability.
  • Review and approve engineering designs and drawings prior to release.
  • Lead product improvement initiatives focused on reliability, cost reduction, manufacturability, and standardization.
  • Investigate field and manufacturing issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, service, supply chain, and sales teams to resolve technical challenges and support customer applications.
  • Evaluate suppliers and support component selection and standardization efforts.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers and project teams.
  • Support product lifecycle management from concept through production and ongoing product support.
  • Skills:

The ideal candidate possesses deep expertise in mechanical drive systems and rotating equipment, with the ability to apply sound engineering principles to challenging low-speed, high-torque applications. Daily responsibilities include evaluating gearbox and bearing performance, analyzing torque transmission systems, improving equipment reliability, and developing customer-specific drive solutions. Strong troubleshooting and failure-analysis capabilities are essential, along with the ability to collaborate across engineering, manufacturing, service, and commercial teams. Experience with wastewater clarifier drives is highly desirable, although candidates from other heavy industrial drive-system industries are encouraged to apply.
