QUALITY CONTROL SPECIALIST The Quality Control (QC) Specialist supports the successful delivery of construction projects by coordinating and executing quality control activities throughout the project lifecycle. This role partners with project teams, trade partners, consultants, and owners to help ensure work is performed in accordance with contract documents, project specifications, applicable codes, and McGough quality standards.The QC Specialist performs field inspections, coordinates testing activities, documents quality observations, and assists in identifying and resolving quality issues. This position serves as a technical resource to project teams while promoting a culture of quality, continuous improvement, and operational excellence. QUALIFICATIONS: Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, Building Science, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant construction experience.
- 3-5+ years of experience in commercial construction, quality control, field engineering, project engineering, or a related construction role.
- Experience performing field inspections and coordinating quality documentation.
- Experience interpreting construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
Preferred:
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or Building Science.
- Seven (7) or more years of commercial construction experience.
- Experience with healthcare, industrial, manufacturing, higher education, or mission-critical construction.
- OSHA 30 certification.
- ICC, ACI, AWS, NICET, or other applicable industry certifications.
- Experience supporting commissioning, building enclosure, or forensic investigations.
- Familiarity with LEED, Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), Low Embodied Carbon (LEC), and sustainable construction practices.
Skills:
- Knowledge of commercial construction methods, materials, sequencing, and quality control practices.
- Working knowledge of applicable building codes and industry standards.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, shop drawings, and submittals.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to build collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and construction management software such as Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud, and Bluebeam.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS: Field Quality Control:
- Perform field quality inspections to verify work complies with contract documents, project specifications, approved submittals, and applicable codes.
- Observe construction activities and identify quality deficiencies, documenting findings and communicating corrective actions to project teams.
- Verify substrate conditions, installation readiness, and workmanship throughout construction.
- Participate in mock-up, first-work, follow-up, and final inspections.
- Assist project teams in reviewing quality expectations prior to installation.
Inspection & Testing Coordination:
- Coordinate quality inspections performed by subcontractors, testing agencies, and manufacturers.
- Monitor third-party testing activities and maintain associated documentation.
- Assist with functional performance testing and commissioning-related quality observations.
- Support manufacturer site visits, inspections, and warranty documentation.
Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate inspection reports, quality logs, punch lists, testing records, and project documentation.
- Track quality issues through resolution and verify corrective actions have been completed.
- Assist in maintaining project quality records in accordance with company and contractual requirements.
- Prepare quality reports for project leadership as requested.
Preconstruction & Project Support:
- Review construction drawings, specifications, submittals, and shop drawings to identify potential quality concerns.
- Participate in constructability reviews and provide input on quality-related risks.
- Support pre-installation meetings by reviewing quality requirements with project teams and trade partners.
- Assist in implementing project-specific quality plans.
Code Compliance:
- Apply knowledge of building codes, industry standards, and project requirements during inspections.
- Coordinate with project teams to promote compliance with applicable regulations and quality expectations.
- Escalate code or specification concerns to project leadership when appropriate.
Problem Solving & Continuous Improvement:
- Assist in investigating quality concerns and identifying potential root causes.
- Recommend practical corrective actions and process improvements.
- Share lessons learned and best practices to improve future project performance.
- Participate in company quality initiatives and continuous improvement efforts.
Collaboration:
- Build positive working relationships with project managers, superintendents, project engineers, trade partners, consultants, testing agencies, and owners.
- Promote proactive communication to support successful project outcomes.
- Participate as an active member of the McGough Quality Team.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
OFFICE AND TRAVEL:
- Position is based in Fargo, ND and requires regular travel to construction sites throughout North Dakota.
- Travel is typically day trips to project sites and may account for up to 50% of working time, depending on project locations and needs.
- Overnight travel occurs as needed for site visits and is generally limited to short 1-2 night stays rather than extended time away from assigned regional office.
