Established in 1865, the George Washington University Law School is the oldest law school in the nation's capital and one of the most prestigious law schools in the country. The Law School is accredited by the American Bar Association and is a charter member of the Association of American Law Schools. GW Law is located on the GW campus in the downtown DC neighborhood familiarly known as Foggy Bottom.
The Associate Program Director, Field Placement will report directly to the Assistant Dean, Field Placement. The Associate Program Director, Field Placement serves as a key member of the Field Placement Program's leadership team and supports the Assistant Dean, Field Placement in the oversight administration, assessment, and continuous improvement of the Program. In conjunction with the Assistant Dean, Field Placement, the position is responsible for directing the day-to-day administration of the Field Placement Program; maintaining subject-matter expertise regarding American Bar Association Standards governing externships and experiential education, as well as programmatic requirements established by GW Law faculty; and serving as a resource and escalation point for faculty, staff, students, and field supervisors on matters relating to externship policy, compliance, and academic requirements.
The Associate Program Director plays a significant role in ensuring the academic quality, pedagogical effectiveness, and regulatory compliance of the Program and supports the implementation, assessment, and continuous improvement of the Field Placement curriculum, including both students' experiential learning in the field and the associated corequisite courses. The position collaborates closely with faculty and field supervisors to promote effective experiential pedagogy, support achievement of program learning outcomes, and strengthen supervision and student mentoring practices. The Associate Program Director also contributes to the assessment of student learning and professional identity formation and helps ensure that students effectively integrate their field placement experiences into their broader legal education and professional development.
The position requires direct and daily interaction with students, faculty, and field supervisors and the exercise of independent professional judgment in matters involving student learning, experiential education, program compliance, and academic policy. This position does not typically have direct reports but may schedule, train, and supervise temporary staff, fellows, student workers, or lead other program staff. Typical duties often are administrative in nature but typically expand to effectively manage a department. or program but lack multiple direct staff subordinates.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Supports the Assistant Dean, Field Placement in managing compliance with American Bar Association Standards governing externships and experiential education, including monitoring placements, supervision, student participation, and program practices to ensure adherence to accreditation requirements and educational objectives.
- Exercises professional judgment in reviewing and monitoring externship placements and supervisory practices to ensure that placements satisfy educational goals, program requirements, and applicable accreditation standards.
- Meets with students, field supervisors, and faculty to address concerns, resolve issues, and promote effective supervision, meaningful reflection, and achievement of learning outcomes associated with experiential education.
- Provides academic advising regarding externships and corequisite courses, including counseling students on placement selection, experiential learning opportunities, professional Identity formation, and alignment of field experiences with educational and career goals.
- Supports the implementation, assessment, and continuous improvement of the Field Placement curriculum, including evaluating program effectiveness, student learning outcomes, and the integration of field-based and classroom-based components of experiential education.
- Collaborates with faculty teaching corequisite courses to promote effective pedagogical practices, curricular integration, and achievement of program learning outcomes.
- Develops and delivers training and pedagogical resources for field supervisors and faculty designed to enhance supervision, student feedback, reflective practice, and experiential learning outcomes.
- Collects, analyzes, and interprets program data to support assessment of student outcomes, program effectiveness, accreditation compliance, and strategic planning initiatives.
- Contributes to and monitors registration and enrollment processes to ensure compliance and data accuracy and collaborates with the Dean of Students Office, Records Office, Clinics, and other administrative offices to ensure compliance with institutional and accreditation requirements.
- Collaborates with the Career Development Office and other stakeholders to connect field placement experiences with students' professional development and employment objectives.
- Participates in the development, expansion, and cultivation of field placement opportunities with governmental, judicial, nonprofit, and other approved legal employers.
- Represents the Field Placement Program before internal and external stakeholders and contributes to orientation sessions, events, and strategic initiatives designed to enhance the Program's visibility, quality, and reputation.
- May serve as a liaison to professional and educational organizations, including the Association of American Law Schools (MLS), the Clinical Legal Education Association (CLEA), the D.C. Bar, the DC Bar Pro Bono Program, the Consortium of Legal Services Providers, the D.C. Access to Justice Commission, the Capital Area Consortium on Externships, and other governmental, judicial, nonprofit, and professional organizations.

| Minimum Qualifications: |
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 3 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. |

| Preferred Qualifications: |
- Juris Doctor degree from an ASA-accredited law school is strongly desired.
- Admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction is a plus.
- Demonstrated legal practice experience is preferred.
- Strong written, oral, interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Ability to exercise independent professional judgment in advising students and addressing programmatic and academic issues.
- Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, supervisors, administrators, and external stakeholders.
- Experience teaching as an adjunct or full-time faculty member at an accredited law school is a plus.
- Experience with experiential legal education, externship programs, clinical legal education, judicial clerkships, or attorney supervision is preferred.
- Familiarity with ABA Standards governing experiential education and law school accreditation is desired.
- Experience advising law students or mentoring early-career attorneys is a plus.
- Experience developing educational programming, training materials, or assessment initiatives is preferred.
