Job/Dept Summary: The Director of Principal & Major Gifts works as part of the Principal & Major Gifts team to identify prospects, develop cultivation and solicitation strategies, and solicit close gifts at the $100,000+ level, with a focus on $1M+ gifts. The incumbent develops and executes complex strategies to secure gifts and assures the appropriate and timely cultivation and stewardship. The Director serves as the primary departmental liaison to multiple hospital departments and divisions and provides a leadership role in their fund-raising activities. The incumbent collaborates closely with volunteers, senior administration, board members, leading benefactors, chiefs of service, physicians, and researchers and supervises staff as appropriate.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manages a prospect pool of approximately 100-120 individuals capable of making gifts of $100,000 or more, with a focus on $1M+ gifts
- Conducts appropriate number of prospect visits to ensure that goals are met, manages, and initiates all activity related to prospects consistent with moves management principles, including travel as needed
- Creatively and persistently seeks connections to new prospects to qualify interest and capacity, and to build pipeline
- Serves as primary staff liaison to assigned dept/programs and develops annual operating plan forecasting solicitations and visits for each department staffed, in consultation with the Associate VP for Principal & Major Gifts
- Builds and nurtures effective working relationships with senior management, dept chiefs, clinicians, researchers, and volunteer leadership to identify funding needs, prepare the case for support, identify prospects and donors, and solicit major gifts
- Recruits, trains, and manages volunteer leaders, and board members to help identify, cultivate and solicit prospective donors. Provides leadership for the establishment of Philanthropic Leadership councils, Task Forces, etc. for depts and programs, as assigned. Develops and sustains close working relationships with board members involved in the major gift's effort
- Prepares contact and activity reports in a timely fashion, ensure all data is entered into donor database
- Collaborates with colleagues throughout the Trust, especially with planned giving, foundations, and leadership giving teams and with Operations teams, including research, special events, communication, corporate/events, finance, and stewardship to assure that prospects are identified, researched, and engaged in the most effective way possible
- Enhance relationships with prospects and donors including the scheduling of cultivation receptions and programs. Assures appropriate and timely stewardship and recognition of gifts
- Plans, coordinates, and provides follow-up to high-level focused cultivation events and other special events
- Writes, drafts and edits letters, proposals, reports, acknowledgements, case materials briefings and donor correspondence, planning specific communication for each donor from various high-level leaders in the institution
Education: A Bachelor's degree with 8 years of experience is required.
Experience:
- Demonstrated ability to cultivate, solicit and close six and seven figure gifts in a complex environment
- The ability to persuade and negotiate with peer level department heads and/or with external agencies/facilities on issues and programs that impact the assigned department as well as several other large departments/divisions

The posted pay range is Boston Children's reasonable and good-faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting. Any base pay offer provided depends on skills, experience, education, certifications, and a variety of other job-related factors.
