Registered Nurse (RN - Behavioral Health Crisis Service Center)- Chesterfield VA

Horizon Health Corporation is seeking a Registered Nurse (RN - Behavioral Health Crisis Service Center) for our brand new Crisis Receiving Center with 24 chairs in Chesterfield VA.The Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive behavioral health, medical, and crisis assessments for individuals presenting with psychiatric, emotional, or substance-use related concerns. The RN utilizes crisis intervention skills, de-escalation techniques, and therapeutic communication to ensure patient and staff safety. This position collaborates with multidisciplinary team members to support treatment planning, education, stabilization, and safe transitions of care.

Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Assessment & Patient Care
    • Conducts thorough nursing assessments including triage, behavioral health evaluations, physical health screenings, and medication reconciliation.
    • Documents all assessments and patient interactions accurately using approved assessment tools.
    • Plans individualized treatment in collaboration with the multidisciplinary clinical team.
    • Administers medications as prescribed and accurately transcribes provider orders.
    • Completes chart checks and performs second-sign verification for prescribed medications.
    • Draws labs, performs wound care, and provides other medical interventions as ordered.
    • Completes nurse-to-nurse communication during discharge or transfer from/to other facilities.
  • Crisis Intervention & Behavioral Management
    • Effectively utilizes crisis intervention strategies to de-escalate aggressive or potentially dangerous situations.
    • Applies therapeutic intervention techniques and maintains therapeutic boundaries.
    • Demonstrates knowledge and application of Seclusion/Restraint standards; completes required documentation and conducts debriefings with individuals involved.
    • Responds calmly and effectively in emergency situations following all code procedures.
  • Education & Patient Support
    • Provides education to individuals and families regarding psychiatric diagnoses, treatment options, medications, and overall health literacy.
    • Ensures individuals are informed about medication regimens and attempts to obtain signatures on medication consent forms when appropriate.
  • Professional Standards & Additional Responsibilities
    • Maintains confidentiality and adheres to all safety policies and procedures.
    • Participates in all aspects of patient care management.
    • Adapts care appropriately when working with adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations.
    • Maintains corporate-required trainings and meets deadlines consistently.
  • Performs other duties as assigned/required by this position.

Qualifications

  • Current unencumbered state RN license where this position provides services required
  • Graduation from an accredited Nursing Program required
  • CPR and First Aid (current certification required) required
  • 1 - 3 years Related Work Experience required
  • Associate degree accepted with relevant experience required.
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • Minimum one year of psychiatric, behavioral health, or related experience
  • Experience in emergency room or crisis psychiatric care strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with Court Ordered Treatment processes desired
  • Experience working with individuals diagnosed with substance use disorders or providing addiction management preferred
  • Code procedures and emergency response protocols
  • Psychiatric care and behavioral health treatment techniques
  • Management strategies for aggressive or escalating behavior
  • Admitting and intake call procedures
  • Personal hygiene training techniques
  • Strong organizational and workload prioritization skills
  • Knowledge of aggressive behavior management and de-escalation techniques
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, staff, and interdisciplinary partners
  • Competent in telephone, radio, and paging communication etiquette
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and team members
  • Maintain confidentiality and practice strong professional judgment
  • Establish and uphold therapeutic boundaries
  • Work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Demonstrate tact, patience, resourcefulness, and compassion
  • Accept direction and adhere to established policies and procedures
  • A Perform effectively in a fast-paced, high-stress environment
  • Provide age-appropriate care across adolescent, adult, and geriatric groups
