This is a part-time role with estimated 29 hours/week. The general range is $28-$34/hr.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan High School (Indy Met) is a free public charter school offering a high school education to students in grades 9-12. Indy Met is a best-fit school for students experiencing circumstances that may present a barrier to education. Our school emphasizes ensuring students enroll in college or enter into a career that offers a living wage post-graduation. Indy Met is designed to serve students who are experiencing circumstances that may become barriers to their education. The School Nurse serves as a member of the Indianapolis Metropolitan High School staff and is responsible for supporting student health, wellness, and readiness to learn. This role provides direct nursing care, health assessments, care coordination, health education, and emergency response services while promoting a safe and healthy school environment. This role collaborates with students, families, school staff, healthcare providers, and community partners to address health-related barriers to student success. This role maintains the highest standards in nursing practice and adheres to all applicable state and federal regulations, professional nursing standards, and Goodwill Legacy Group's policies and procedures.

Example Duties and Activities

  • Supports students in overcoming health-related barriers to attendance, engagement, graduation, and post-secondary success.

  • Assesses student health concerns and provides nursing interventions within the scope of professional nursing practice.

  • Administers medications and treatments according to physician orders, parental consent, and school policies.

  • Responds to illness, injury, and medical emergencies occurring during the school day and school-sponsored activities.

  • Conducts health screenings and required follow-up activities in accordance with state and local guidelines.

  • Develops, implements, and monitors Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs), Emergency Action Plans (EAPs), and health accommodations for students with acute and chronic health conditions.

  • Monitors and supports students with conditions such as asthma, diabetes, seizure disorders, severe allergies, mental health concerns, and other health needs.

  • Maintains appropriate infection prevention, communicable disease management, and health office protocols.

  • Participates in multidisciplinary student support meetings and contributes health-related recommendations and interventions.

  • Connects students and families with community healthcare providers, mental health resources, and other community supports as appropriate.

  • Maintains accurate, confidential, and timely student health records in accordance with HIPAA, FERPA, state regulations, and school policies.

  • Reviews and maintains immunization records and follows up with families regarding compliance requirements.

  • Documents nursing assessments, interventions, medications, treatments, incidents, referrals, and health office visits.

  • Completes required reports and assists with health-related audits, compliance reviews, and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Maintains medication inventories and ensures the secure storage, handling, and disposal of medications and health supplies.

  • Maintains health office equipment, supplies, and inventory and identifies needs for replacement or replenishment.

  • Participates in required professional development and maintains all required nursing licensure and certifications.

  • Stays informed regarding current nursing practices, public health guidance, school health regulations, and emerging student health concerns.

  • Serves as a health resource for school staff and provides training related to student health needs, medication administration, emergency response, communicable disease prevention, and other health topics.

  • Develops positive relationships with students, families, healthcare providers, and community partners.

  • Communicates health concerns, recommendations, and care plans to families in a timely, professional, and culturally responsive manner.

  • Coordinates care with physicians, therapists, hospitals, and other healthcare providers as appropriate.

  • Completes all required trainings and maintains compliance with school, state, and federal requirements.

  • Follows Indiana Department of Education, Indiana Department of Health, and applicable nursing practice regulations.

  • Maintains student confidentiality and privacy protections at all times.

  • Supports emergency preparedness planning, school safety initiatives, and crisis response efforts.

  • Arrives on time and is present during assigned work hours and school activities as required.

  • Performs other duties as assigned in support of student health, wellness, and school success.

Required Competencies

  • Degree and Credential Requirements - Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Current Indiana Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing, or ability to obtain prior to start date. Current CPR and First Aid certification, or ability to obtain upon hire.

  • Student Engagement - Takes a strengths-based, student-centered approach to developing relationships while establishing appropriate boundaries. Adept at delivering feedback that is constructive and unbiased. Creates and maintains a safe environment for open discussions and student support.

  • Building Collaborative Relationships - Develops, maintains, and strengthens partnerships at all levels with others inside or outside the organization who can provide information, assistance, and support. Is able to receive as well as provide feedback to improve performance or processes.

  • Technical Knowledge - Has working knowledge of G Suite and MS Office.

  • Planning and Prioritization - Manages competing demands by effectively organizing issues by relevance considering operational objectives and customer service excellence. Excellent time management, planning, scheduling, and coordination skills. Is able to work in a highly structured environment and quickly adapts to changes in priorities or deadlines while maintaining a positive attitude. Effectively navigates complex situations to ensure that tasks are completed on time and to a high standard.

  • Conflict Resolution - Anticipates, diffuses, and resolves disagreements, confrontations, tensions, and complaints in a practical and constructive manner in order to achieve results.

  • Strong Work Ethic - Demonstrates a high degree of professionalism, has a drive to succeed at any task, produces consistent and high-quality work, is organized and timely, and is able to work with minimal supervision.

Preferred Competencies

  • Industry Standards - Experience as a school nurse, pediatric nurse, public health nurse, community health nurse, emergency nurse, or adolescent health nurse. Experience working with trauma-informed practices and diverse student populations. Knowledge of Section 504 plans, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and school-based health services.

Other Requirements

  • Background Screening - All candidates must pass a pre-employment background check. Must have a valid driver's license, a good driving record, and qualify under the district's insurance carrier when driving a district vehicle.

  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of school nursing, including responding to emergencies and assisting students when necessary.
