Sr. Public Relations Specialist

As a Public Relations Specialist, you will play an important role in promoting Duke University's teaching, research, and clinical achievements through strategic communications and media engagement.

You will join a collaborative team dedicated to sharing the impact of Duke's groundbreaking work with local, national, and international audiences. In this role, you will help develop and execute communications strategies that elevate Duke's reputation and enhance awareness of its research, academic, and healthcare initiatives.

What You'll Do:



  • Assist in planning and coordinating comprehensive public relations initiatives designed to promote Duke University programs, activities, and accomplishments to both general and specialized audiences.
  • Develop and implement creative promotional ideas and communication activities that support organizational goals and strategic priorities.
  • Gather, analyze, and prepare information regarding research, medical, educational, and institutional activities for distribution through a variety of media channels.
  • Write and edit news releases, feature stories, media materials, and other communications content for external audiences.
  • Conduct interviews and research to develop compelling stories that highlight the impact of Duke faculty, staff, researchers, and programs.
  • Consult with faculty and staff across the University and Health System to obtain and translate complex information into clear, engaging communications.
  • Serve as a liaison to local, national, and international media representatives and help foster positive relationships that support Duke's communication objectives.
  • Assist in planning and promoting University events, initiatives, and activities through integrated communication and public relations efforts.
  • Coordinate communications activities and resources to maximize effectiveness, consistency, and audience engagement.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.



What You'll Bring

Education

Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field.

Experience

Two years of directly related professional writing, communications, journalism, public relations, or media relations experience.

OR

An equivalent combination of relevant education, training, and experience.

Preferred Competencies



  • Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong interviewing, research, and storytelling abilities.
  • Experience developing content for multiple communication channels and audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines.
  • Strong editorial and copy-editing skills.
  • Ability to build productive relationships with faculty, staff, media representatives, and external stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of media relations and public relations best practices.

Anticipated Pay Range: Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $61,026.00 to USD $88,434.00. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
