Job Title: Animal Technician

Location(s): San Francisco, CA

Position Summary
The Animal Technician supports laboratory animal research operations by providing daily animal care, maintaining animal housing areas, performing sanitation and equipment-related duties, monitoring animal health, and maintaining accurate records.

The role involves caring for laboratory animals, including rodents, in accordance with established procedures, applicable laws, regulations, and institutional standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide daily care and monitoring of laboratory animals.
  • Change animal cages and racks according to established procedures.
  • Provide food and water as required.
  • Maintain animal housing areas and equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Operate cage washers and autoclaves for cleaning and sterilization.
  • Perform routine room sanitation, disinfection, and cleaning.
  • Monitor animal health and promptly identify and report health concerns.
  • Maintain accurate and legible animal care and facility records.
  • Complete per-diem records, animal health surveillance records, feed logs, temperature/humidity charts, and animal receipt/disposition records.
  • Scan cage barcodes and use electronic systems for health surveillance reporting.
  • Communicate animal health and facility concerns to veterinary, research, and compliance personnel.
  • Perform technical procedures as required to support laboratory operations.
  • Identify problems, take appropriate corrective action, and report issues promptly.
  • Follow all applicable animal care, safety, regulatory, and facility procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Minimum 1 year of animal handling or laboratory animal sanitation/equipment operations experience.
  • General knowledge of feeding, caging, and space requirements for multiple species used in biomedical research.
  • Knowledge of animal health monitoring and ability to recognize and report health concerns.
  • Knowledge of disinfection, sanitation, and cleaning agents.
  • Ability to operate cage washers and autoclaves.
  • General knowledge of applicable federal and regulatory requirements governing laboratory animal care.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Basic computer and email skills.
  • Ability to scan cage barcodes and use electronic systems for reporting.
  • Ability to complete online training and electronic timesheets.
  • Ability to follow workplace and animal facility safety rules.
  • Ability to work in environments where eating, drinking, and smoking restrictions apply.
  • Ability to wear required PPE, including protective clothing, safety glasses, safety shoes, gloves, face masks, and respirators when assigned.
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and walk/stand on hard surfaces for up to 7 hours per day.
  • Ability to safely push, pull, move, and lift loads weighing up to 50 pounds.

Education & Experience
Candidates must meet one of the following:

  • High school diploma/GED, training equivalent to Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification, and at least 1 year of applicable animal care experience; OR
  • High school diploma/GED and at least 2 years of animal care experience involving an appropriate animal species; OR
  • Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience demonstrating the knowledge and abilities required for the position.

Preferred Background
Experience in laboratory animal care, biomedical research facilities, animal husbandry, animal health monitoring, cage sanitation, or laboratory animal facility operations is highly desirable.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements
This position requires substantial physical activity and work within laboratory animal housing areas. The successful candidate must be able to:

  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Bend, squat, kneel, and reach above shoulder level.
  • Work on hard surfaces for extended periods.
  • Safely lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Consistently use required personal protective equipment.
  • Follow strict animal facility hygiene, safety, and compliance procedures.

Schedule:

  • Monday-Friday, 7:30 AM-4:30 PM
