Position Overview

The Staff Nurse provides direct and indirect nursing care to adult and geriatric patients in a correctional healthcare environment, with a primary focus on ambulatory care. This role utilizes the nursing process to assess patient needs, establish patient-centered goals, implement prescribed interventions, and evaluate outcomes while working collaboratively with healthcare professionals and correctional staff. The Staff Nurse follows established nursing protocols, promotes a safe and secure care environment, and may serve as a team leader as assigned. This position requires the ability to work effectively in a controlled, high-stress environment while maintaining professional communication, clinical competency, and patient-centered care.

Job Responsibilities




  • Assess and identify the physical, psychosocial, and emotional healthcare needs of adult and geriatric patients.



  • Develop patient-centered goals and nursing objectives based on identified healthcare needs.



  • Implement prescribed nursing interventions and evaluate patient responses and outcomes.



  • Provide direct and indirect nursing care in accordance with established correctional healthcare policies, procedures, and nursing protocols.



  • Collaborate effectively with healthcare professionals, correctional officers, and other facility personnel.



  • Communicate with patients and team members in a respectful, professional, and courteous manner.



  • Promote and maintain a safe environment for the delivery of healthcare services.



  • Follow applicable security regulations, facility procedures, and controlled movement requirements.



  • Function as a team leader when assigned and contribute to the professional development of coworkers.



  • Maintain required nursing licensure, credentials, and continuing education.



  • Participate in ongoing professional development to maintain and enhance correctional nursing knowledge and clinical skills.



  • Adhere to applicable personnel policies and procedures to support effective healthcare unit operations.



  • Respond appropriately to emergency situations and perform first-responder responsibilities as required.




Job Requirements




  • Correctional nursing experience preferred, with a minimum of one year of experience in a correctional setting preferred.



  • Current license to practice nursing in the State of New Jersey.



  • Current CPR certification.



  • Valid driver's license.



  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.



  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.



  • Ability to work effectively in a stressful, secure correctional environment.



  • Ability to work collaboratively with patients, correctional officers, and healthcare team members.



  • Ability to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes.



  • Ability to lift and carry an emergency treatment bag weighing up to 45 pounds, including carrying it upstairs.



  • Ability to assist with lifting and repositioning non-ambulatory patients, including lifting up to 50 pounds.



  • Ability to maintain required annual licensure, credentials, and continuing education.



  • Ability to comply with all applicable security regulations and facility procedures.

Additional Job Details (Commute, Attendance, etc.)




  • Evening shifts are available.



  • Position is based in a correctional facility in Avenel, New Jersey.



  • Must have a personal vehicle or reliable alternative transportation for travel between sites as required.



  • Entry into and movement throughout the correctional facility are controlled by Correctional Officers.



  • Must comply with all applicable facility security regulations and procedures.



  • Work may involve exposure to infections and contagious diseases.
