Organization Overview

The Integrated Facilities Management (IFM) Division, within the Facilities and Operations Directorate, proactively and efficiently manages, maintains, and prepares the Laboratory's infrastructure for cutting-edge science under a system of facility project managers and custodial staff who ensure that all the Lab's facilities are mission ready. IFM's Custodial Services strives to effectively serve the Brookhaven National Laboratory community in a professional manner and provide a safe, clean, and sanitary environment in which to learn and work. Additionally, it is IFM's mission to build a cohesive work team to ensure customer satisfaction.

Position Description

The Integrated Facilities Management (IFM) Division seeks a Custodial Services Supervisor to coordinate safe, healthy, clean, and efficient facilities by directing activities and operations of the Custodial Services Team.

This position will report to the Facility Complex Management Manager. The hours of operation for this position are Monday-Friday 7am to 3:30pm.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise custodial and department functions (i.e., work planning, scheduling, coordinating activities, training, discipline, evaluation) for the purpose of ensuring that assignments are completed in a safe, proper, and timely manner.
  • Inspect buildings and facilities for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe, and attractive environment.
  • Maintain records and reports on employee attendance and performance, and work of the team.
  • Perform work requirement analysis, job layout, equipment selection, material orders and labor hour estimates.
  • Work in close cooperation with other Custodial Services Supervisors in technical planning and job layout to ensure that all cleaning and related work is performed.
  • Respond to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.
  • Enforce procedures and policies, advising and monitoring custodial staff actions.
  • Participate in and lead meetings, toolboxes, training, and presentations.
  • Prepare various reports and maintain records/files.
  • Assist in the oversight and evaluation of specified contract services provided by vendors.
  • Maintain equipment and supply inventories and perform equipment inspections.
  • Report and track facility work orders.
  • Promote and contribute to a respectful and collaborative work environment that encourages knowledge sharing, mutual respect, and the development of skills across the workforce.
  • Demonstrate commitment to working safely, acting ethically, and taking personal accountability for operational excellence.

The above list of duties is not all inclusive of every duty performed by this position but does include the major elements in the job.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • A minimum of three years' custodial experience, to include supervision, training, and detailed knowledge of custodial principles, practices, equipment, and recycling.
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service, and communication (verbal, written and presentation) skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge of video conferencing such as Zoom, MS Teams.
  • Experience using a computerized maintenance program (such as Maximo).
  • Data-gathering, problem-solving, analysis and math skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, in a fast-paced environment, with frequent interruptions and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Knowledge of methods of industrial cleaning, recycling, and safety practices and procedures.
  • Valid NYS Driver's License.

Preferred knowledge, skills, and Abilities:

  • Sevenyears' broad custodial experience including supervision.
  • Project planning and project management skills.
  • Familiarity with Team Cleaning Processes.
  • Work-loading experience and familiarity with Cleaning Times and Tasks including Job Cards, Kitting Planner and Staffing Plan.
  • Ability to read building plans.
  • College education or Technical School Certification.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Must be able to bend and perform heavy lifting (30 lbs.+).
  • Ability to walk/stand for extended periods of time.
  • Able to wear protective clothing/equipment.
  • Able to work with/near moving machinery, be exposed to chemicals, fumes, hazardous waste, and potential exposure to radiation.
  • Ability to use fixed and portable ladders.
  • Ability to wear proper PPE such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and hearing protection.
  • Several facilities at BNL are radiological facilities and require special dosimitry and training for access.These will be provided by BNL as required.
  • Able to occasionally work irregular hours.

Other Information:

  • BNL business hours are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
  • This is a salaried (exempt from overtime) position.

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $85,500-102,600 a year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
