What Your Job Will Be Like

Are you passionate about your work and dream of using innovative solutions to solve complex problems? If so, you could be the Safeguards & Security Planning and Operations Specialist we are seeking to partner with others in providing performance reporting and management support for the Safeguards & Security (S&S) Program, directly supporting the Senior Manager for S&S Programs (9220).

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Plan, facilitate, and coordinate activities for the S&S Program, support management with strategic level program reviews, and maintain the strategic plan by tracking and reporting actions associated with key achievements.
  • Lead projects with lab-wide/mission critical impact and that further the sustainability of the laboratories and the S&S Program.
  • Develop and publish S&S reports, which are provided to all levels of Sandia leadership and external partners.
  • Facilitate efforts among subject matter professionals across programs, laboratories, external/internal collaborators and management.
  • Influence consensus and facilitate the resolution of conflicts.
  • Review and report on performance metrics.
  • Provide support for developing presentations for Senior Managers, Director, and Division Leadership.
  • Use project management and Lean Six Sigma tools to analyze problems and to improve processes.
  • Handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality; support special studies and projects; and collaborate with a diverse set of customers and management.
Salary Range

$87,400 - $168,800

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Communications, Information Security/Assurance, Criminology, Public Administration, or other relevant discipline plus five (5) or more years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in leading/guiding management decisions and providing Project Management expertise on large-impact projects.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and work independently on multiple concurrent activities to meet a variety of customer requirements with changing priorities and short deadlines.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking skills to synthesize disparate detailed data into useful information.
  • Ability to develop high-impact PowerPoint presentations from diverse pieces of information.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an active DOE Q-level security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire

  • Three (3) years of Sandia experience, preferably in multiple areas of the lab.
  • Experience with or substantial knowledge of strategic planning for organizations.
  • Experience in applying Quality Tools (e.g. RCA, Statistics, Lean methodology, Six Sigma).
  • Ability to work in a team-focused environment, exercise discretion, and maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Independently determine areas of focus based on risk management principals.
  • Experience with successful interactions with all levels of management, including executive leadership.
  • Strong customer focus as well as facilitation, critical thinking, and organizational skills.
  • Understanding of Sandia programs, policies, organizations, procedures, and administrative systems.
  • Ability to conceptualize and communicate major elements of performance assurance to both technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Ability to select methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for achieving results (e.g. Planning strategically, decision-making models).
  • Familiarity with the following S&S fields: Personnel Security, International Security and Risk Management, Nuclear Material Management & Material Control & Accountability.
About Our Team

The Safeguards & Security (9200) purpose is to protect people, information, facilities, and material to enable our national security mission. S&S solves security challenges by listening to customer needs and then developing and implementing solutions. S&S continues to monitor and manage risks that could adversely affect the security of our operations and safety of our workforce.

The S&S Programs (9220) include functional areas that offer security expertise to members of the workforce, mission partners, and stakeholders. Expertise is offered through development and dissemination of critical security guidance and key services that mitigate and assess risk to protect the members of the workforce and national security.

Focal initiatives implemented by S&S Programs include:

  • Authorizing appropriate security access to people, facilities, and information.
  • Ensuring safe, secure, and efficient foreign travel for members of the workforce.
  • Assessing and tracking the storage of accountable nuclear material (ANM).
Posting Duration

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
