The Business Intelligence Developer (BID) serves as an expert in clinical informatics, Epic Electronic Health Record (EHR) reporting, and enterprise data visualization tools. The BID applies deep knowledge of Epic applications and demonstrates exceptional skill in partnering with reporting and analytics stakeholders to understand, design, and document complex data needs. This role coordinates all issues that arise during reporting and analytics initiatives and frequently addresses problems without precedent or existing structure across UCSF Health, Benioff Children's Hospitals, and affiliated organizations.

The BID performs advanced data analysis using independent judgment and technical expertise to support outstanding patient care, operational performance, quality improvement, and strategic decisionmaking. Core responsibilities include developing and optimizing EHR reporting, data analysis, and visualization solutions across multiple systems-Epic reporting tools, SQL, Tableau, and related platforms. This position also participates in clinical systems application teams to evaluate data, gather stakeholder feedback, and leverage analytics to support hospital, clinic, staff, program, and operational performance.

This role includes dedicated responsibility to support Beaker analytic reporting for UCSF Health and affiliates, ensuring highquality laboratory analytics, operational insights, and clinical reporting across the enterprise.

Attention to detail and strong communication skills are essential. The BID helps users adopt development standards, improve reporting practices, and enhance data visualization capabilities. The role requires expert knowledge of Epic applications and reporting tools-including Reporting Workbench, Radar, SlicerDicer, SQL Server, and Tableau-as well as advanced analytical abilities in data extraction, report generation, and information visualization. The BID may also develop training materials and educate end users on reporting tools and functions.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in health care information technology, computer science, or related area, and/or equivalent combination of experience/training.
  • 5 - 7 years of related experience.
  • Expertise on EHR application(s) and a good working knowledge of how the application(s) collect and store data.
  • High proficiency with EHR reporting tools, SQL, as well as in the use of business intelligence tools such as SAP universe, web intelligence, and Crystal Reports. Ability to perform complex data analysis with large volumes of data.
  • Prior experience developing self-service analytic tools utilizing Slicerdicer, Tableau Desktop and/or Tableau Server
  • Broadly encompassing or highly in-depth knowledge of 1-2 areas of focus in clinical informatics specialty areas, but predominantly in Beaker. Knowledge of controlled terminology, clinical workflows, user interface optimization, clinical decision support, rules development, data integration and mining, clinical ontologies, and adoption of technology.
  • In-depth knowledge of all relevant clinical informatics software and systems, especially Beaker, and of the highly complex concepts, principles, policies, methodologies, techniques, best practices, regulations, and standards practices involved with patient care and electronic medical data management in the UC health care system.
  • Advanced interpersonal communications skills, to convey highly technical information and instructions to all levels of clinical users in a clear and concise manner, to provide technical support, and to develop and deliver training materials as needed.
  • Ability to apply advanced problem-resolution skills to highly complex issues, quickly diagnose problems, and develop, test, and implement appropriate and effective solutions in a timely manner.
  • Advanced analytical skills and expertise in documentation and reporting, with the ability to apply metrics, design and run queries, collect and analyze performance data, and produce sophisticated reports and analyses for management use.
  • Advanced ability to serve as a technical leader and information resource for Beaker, and to work collaboratively with senior staff and management across departments, providing advice, counsel, and analysis on issues of policy, functionality, system efficiency, upgrades, business analytics, and industry advances and trends.
