About the Department:


The College of Science Finance team serves the financial and procurement needs for the college. This includes providing excellent customer service to our departments, central university stakeholders, and other colleges within the university. The overall department is in charge of planning and execution of the college's finance and procurement related initiatives and processes including financial management and budgeting, forecasting and modeling, and financial controls.

About the Position:


The Financial Analyst provides operational financial support to assigned academic and administrative units within the College of Science. The position performs financial reconciliations, budget monitoring, routine financial reporting, and transactional financial activities to support sound fiscal management and compliance with university policies. Working under general supervision, the Financial Analyst assists departmental leadership by providing accurate financial information, supporting budget development activities, and identifying discrepancies requiring further review. The position contributes to effective financial operations through attention to detail, customer service, and adherence to established procedures.


Responsibilities:


Financial Reconciliation and Financial Reporting:



  • Performs reconciliations of assigned organizations and funds;
  • Monitors expenditures and available balances;
  • Prepares recurring financial reports and budget summaries;
  • Assists with monthly tracking of revenue and expenditures;
  • Supports budget development through data collection and analysis;
  • Coordinates carryforward and budget adjustment requests;
  • Ensures financial activities comply with university policies and procedures; and
  • Maintains financial records and supporting documentation.


Financial Operations:



  • Processes journal vouchers, labor redistributions, and budget transfers;
  • Reviews purchases and personnel transactions for compliance;
  • Assists departments with routine financial questions;
  • Coordinates financial transactions with central university offices;
  • Partners with colleagues to facilitate operational and finance related projects; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications:



  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience;
  • Prior experience working with databases;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite; intermediate Excel skills (e.g., formulas, basic pivot tables);
  • Working knowledge of financial systems;
  • Knowledge of standard financial reporting requirements and transaction processing procedures;
  • General knowledge of fiscal and budgetary processes and general accounting principles;
  • Skill in reconciling financial transactions and maintaining accurate documentation;
  • Skill in compiling financial data and generating recurring reports;
  • Ability to recognize discrepancies and route issues through appropriate channels;
  • Ability to apply established policies, procedures, and financial guidelines consistently;
  • Ability to organize workload and complete assignments within established deadlines;
  • Ability to interact professionally and effectively with faculty, staff, and stakeholders; and
  • Adapt to changing technologies and practices.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field;
  • Experience with budget planning and monitoring expenditures;
  • Experience in handling confidential data such as salary information;
  • Experience with a large public institution;
  • Prior experience working with databases (preferably with George Mason systems, i.e., Banner, eVA, etc.);
  • Knowledge of George Mason information systems, such as Banner, eVA, etc.;
  • Knowledge of higher education practices and university fund structures;
  • Skill in navigating financial databases and generating ad hoc reports; and
  • Curiosity, initiative, and a commitment to professional growth.
