Position Summary

The Exhibits Maintenance Technician performs daily exhibit inspections, approved cleaning and preventive maintenance, minor repairs, artifact-support tasks, and digital-catalog support. Heavy exhibit fabrication or construction is outside the routine scope unless separately authorized.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily pre-opening gallery rounds to identify lighting, interactive, presentation, safety, and condition issues.

  • Clean exhibit cases, vitrines, pedestals, scenic elements, and approved surfaces using archival-safe materials and established procedures.

  • Perform minor exhibit and interactive-station repairs, touch-up work, and approved adjustments that preserve a polished public presentation.

  • Assist with authorized movement of furniture, equipment, scenic pieces, and event-related materials.

  • Handle, move, mount, or unmount artifacts only under a Government-approved handling plan, within assigned qualifications, and in coordination with authorized collections personnel.

  • Support digital cataloging, approved display installation, light adjustment within prescribed lux guidelines, and organized storage of pedestals, hardware, and casework.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate or Bachelor degree in illustrative design, commercial art, fine arts, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, or related technical field. Qualifying vocational or art-institute training may be credited as experience.

  • Two to five years in exhibit preparation, specimen/artifact handling or mounting, or safe use of standard carpentry, electrical, and mechanical hand and power tools.

  • Proficiency with shop-safety practices and reading blueprints or CAD drawings.

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work safely in tight spaces or at heights.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Gallery lighting, archival-safe material knowledge, artifact-mount making, integrated pest management, and interactive-exhibit maintenance.

  • Basic AV or electronics troubleshooting, fine finishing, patching, sanding, and touch-up painting.

  • Current certification or demonstrated safe experience operating specialized equipment such as manlifts.
