Position Overview
| Essential Job Duties |
This position will support an ongoing project with the
NCDOT to evaluate road ripples and the position may generally involve supporting other short duration experimental mechanical evaluations of asphalt concrete mixtures. The position will also provide some laboratory and project management support.
The main duties and responsibilities include:
- Conduct and synthesize literature and agency-practice reviews related to road ripples, including potential formation mechanisms, diagnostic methods, contributing factors, and pavement-performance implications.
- Coordinate and participate in field and forensic evaluations of North Carolina pavements exhibiting road ripples, including site selection, records and data compilation, field testing, sample collection, laboratory evaluation, and comparative analysis.
- Plan, conduct, and analyze laboratory and modeling studies to evaluate residual moisture in asphalt mixtures and the potential short- and long-term effects of road ripples on pavement performance.
- Draft quarterly reports and monthly reports to support the aforementioned research project and/or similar project.
- May be asked to participate in other research projects related to aforementioned topic as projects are awarded.
- Coordinate laboratory management activities in support of the asphalt mixture analysis group tasks. This may include coordinating graduate students for cleaning, ensuring PPE is appropriately worn, ensuring supplies are ordered, and coordinating on calibrations.

| Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education |
- Ph.D. in Civil or Environmental Engineering is preferred or closely related field (at the time of appointment).
- Knowledge of asphalt materials, pavement construction, and performance, particularly moisture-related distress, layer bonding, and pavement forensic evaluation.
- Experience conducting or supporting field and laboratory investigations of asphalt pavements, including pavement condition assessment, sample collection and handling, nondestructive testing, asphalt mixture testing, or pavement-performance analysis.
- Familiarity with statistical modeling approaches.
- Familiarity with state highway agency and/or federal agency research reporting requirements.
