Performing Arts Operations

Job Description

The Touhill Performing Arts Center at the University of Missouri-St. Louis creates opportunities for the people of our region to experience, appreciate and embrace the transformational power of the performing arts. The House Manager provides leadership in setting up and running small- to medium-sized assigned events or assisting the Lead House Manager on larger events either in the Anheuser-Busch Performance Hall or Lee Theater, or in other venues as directed.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

[Pre-Event] - 30%

  • Understanding the event: receiving relevant paperwork, reading and familiarizing themselves with the information and details of the event.
  • Making all preparations for the arrival of patrons: checking for venue and area cleanliness, organization, and appropriate setup.
  • Receiving assigned volunteer and student or part-time ushers and ensuring they are informed and prepared for the event.

[During-Event] - 25%

  • Directing usher staff and volunteers during the event and providing leadership.
  • Enforcing Touhill policies regarding proper theater decorum, seating issues, and disruptive patrons while maintaining a welcoming and friendly demeanor.
  • Enforcing and executing public safety procedures when necessary.

[Post-Event] - 25%

  • Securing front-of-house and theater doors, accounting for lost-and-found, and remaining vigilant until all patrons have safely exited.
  • Releasing volunteer and student or part-time ushers post-show.
  • Assessing work performance done by assigned staff and volunteers, filling out necessary reports, and submitting recommendations on the event itself and personnel to appropriate full-time staff.

[Coordinating with Other PAC and Campus Entities] - 15%

  • Interacting with other Touhill PAC staff members including, but not limited to, the Ticket Office, Production Services, and custodians, as well as interaction with other UMSL departments such as Campus Police or Facilities and Maintenance.

[Training] - 05%

  • Completing University-mandated training as required.
  • Completing Touhill-specific training (and/or Touhill qualification(s)) as required.

As with all positions, may perform other job-related responsibilities as needed to support departmental and campus-wide needs.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and some work experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with House Management or front-of-house operations.
  • An understanding of theatrical terminology, equipment, and usages.
  • Customer service experience
  • Communicates professionally in both verbal and written formats.
  • Ability to work long and unusual hours, including late at night.
  • Willingness to work hard and take direction.
Anticipated Hiring Range

$19.50-$25.50
