Essential Functions

1. Assists with patient assessment and care provision under the direction of the Registered Nurse.

Measures and records patient information, including height, weight, and vital signs.
Obtains, prepares, and preserves specimens for laboratory testing.
Performs bedside and point-of-care laboratory testing.
Observes, reports, and records patient responses to care.
Identifies and reports deviations in vital signs, patient observations, and patient needs to the Registered Nurse.

2. Assists patients with nutritional and elimination needs.

Provides feeding assistance to patients who are unable to feed themselves.
Passes, collects, and checks food trays.
Assists patients with bedpans, urinals, and commodes.
Assists with the care and management of external devices exiting the body.
Measures and records intake and output.
Assists with colostomy care.

3. Assists patients with bed rest, mobility, personal hygiene, and grooming.

Transports patients from one location to another.
Assists patients with transfers and the appropriate use of assistive devices.
Assists with ambulation to promote and maintain mobility and functional independence.
Assists patients with dressing and undressing.
Provides bed rest care.
Assists patients with bathing.
Assists with oral hygiene and promotes oral health.

4. Assists patients with comfort care and emotional support.

Protects patient rights, privacy, and confidentiality, particularly for patients who are minors or unable to make decisions independently.
Provides reassurance and support to reduce patient anxiety.
Facilitates appropriate visits from family members and friends.
Responds promptly to call bells and reports patient needs as appropriate.
Provides orientation to the patient's room and unit.
Assists patients with communication needs, including use of the nursing call system and telephone.
Provides appropriate diversional activities.
Provides comfort measures, such as back rubs, music, and reading materials.

5. Promotes patient safety and maintains a clean and orderly environment.

Uses side rails appropriately.
Maintains the patient's environment to promote safety, comfort, and well-being.
Makes and changes patient beds as needed.
Cleans and maintains patient care equipment.
Follows transmission-based precautions.
Follows oxygen safety precautions.
Provides emergency care and life-saving measures in life-threatening situations as trained and directed.
Maintains suicide precautions.
Maintains seizure precautions.

6. Supports unit operations and organizational needs.

Performs errands and other tasks as required, including delivering specimens to the laboratory, transporting patients, assisting with special procedures, and completing other assigned duties.
Assists the Registered Nurse with the patient discharge process.
Assists with the orientation of new or transferred employees.
Prioritizes delegated tasks based on patient care needs and unit activities.
Requests assistance with delegated tasks when needed or when clarification is required.
Completes assigned work within established timeframes and reports unfinished responsibilities.
Assists with supply management and ensures appropriate supplies are available for patient care.
Demonstrates appropriate telephone etiquette and promptly and accurately relays messages and completes appropriate contacts.
Documents equipment repair and maintenance needs.

7. Maintains current knowledge and competency in LNA/HUC practice.

Acquires and maintains clinical knowledge and skills appropriate to the assigned area and practice setting.
Maintains personal documentation of in-service education and training attendance.

8. Demonstrates competency in procedures and skills under the direction of the Registered Nurse.

Glucometer testing
Pulse oximetry
Automatic blood pressure monitoring
Restraint application and monitoring
Simple dressing changes
IV removal
Application of heat and cold
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) prevention
Sequential compression device operation
Foley catheter removal
CCTV monitoring
Administration of enemas

Qualifications

Experience

Minimum Required:

  • None

Preferred/Desired:

  • Three months of LNA experience, preferably in an acute care setting
Education

Minimum Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Graduate of an approved nursing assistant program
Licensure and/or Certifications

Required:

  • Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA)
  • American Red Cross (ARC) or American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
